Book
Today Will be Different by Maria Semple. She's the author of Where'd You Go, Bernadette, and this novel serves another dose of biting Seattle not-so-typical slice of life.
Music
Nick Cave's covers of Leonard Cohen's songs are my favorite.
TV
I've been enjoying every minute of The Crown. We've also binged on the second season of Red Oaks (Amazon). This bittersweet story of a group of twentysomethings in Bergen County, NJ, during the 1980s deserves more attention and hype.
Link
Just watch the last episode of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight. Otherwise I've got nothing.
Not safe for work, obviously.
Perfume
Vintage: Magie Noire. The real stuff, especially in the huile concentration. New: Atelier des Ors Iris Fauve.
Makeup
Dark dark red lips.
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit
It's black tights season again. I can't say I'm too happy about it.
Food
A bowl of fresh ricotta cheese with two spoons of honey blended in. Or a plate of burrata with a slice tomato. Or Irish cheese wedges. There's a theme here.
Bane
I can't even.
Joy
A bubble of home life, cats, friends, decorating. And cheese. We'll always have cheese.
Anticipation
More cheese?
Wishlist
I keep having to remind myself that very short women should probably avoid over-the-knee boots, but this Givenchy doesn't look half bad:
Random Thought
You know it's bad when it feels like Bill Mahr isn't using enough profanity.
Dare I ask how are you? What's on your list of loves and banes? Any wishes and recommendations?
Art: Charles Burchfield, Autumn Wind, 1949. I've always found that Burchfield is to anxiety what Van Gogh is to hallucinations.
Hey there Gaia,
ReplyDeleteCurrently reading The Herland Trilogy by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Can't quite believe it was written back in 1915, everything seems so current.
Music: Little Mix
Perfume: Granville by DIOR
Love reading yours
Portia xx
At this point, I feel like I don't know ENOUGH profanity!
ReplyDeleteIf this is a duplicate post and the first one has a typo, use this one instead, please!
And for some comfort food on your same theme...I'm finding a salad of arugula with sweet cherry tomatoes and buratta dressed with olive oil and balsamic hits the spot...

ReplyDeleteA Light That Never Goes Out: The Enduring Saga of the Smiths by Tony Fletcher
Music
Portishead
Perfume
Have been craving for irises and vetiver.
Makeup
While there still was snow, I enjoyed dark red or murky nails (Chanel Rouge Noir and Vertigo) but now I had to dig up my traditional November shade: Essie Clambake. Lipstickwise I have gone from MAC Russian Red and D for Danger to Lady Danger, Dangerous (there's an obvious theme here) and So Chaud.
Frequently worn item
Inouïtoosh shawls have given way to Pavlovo Posad shawls: just like I need orangy red lips and nails, I need Russian floral motifs to cheer me up in November gloom.
Food
Eggplants, pasta and CHEESE.
Wishlist
Snow and about five degrees below zero temperature, please.
Yes to John Oliver! Bright red lipstick all around. Currently wearing MAC limited edition Opera. Nothing is as comforting than a lovely wedge of cheese with some fruit, nuts and a glass of port or red wine. Try and find Chevre Noir. It is a goat cheddar from Quebec and addictive.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that painting - love Burchfield.
ReplyDeletePerfume: Les Liquides Imaginaires Peau de Bete - only have a decant, but I think I may need a bottle.
Food: Not in the mood for eating, but when I do, it's mushrooms and Li Hing Mui (dried salted, licorice flavored plums). But fresh ricotta sounds heavenly - think I'll go get some today.
Music: Leonard and Nick Drake's Pink Moon
Makeup: Waterproof mascara.
Wishlist: Time travel and/or forced history lessons for all people of voting age.
Books: Rereading Bulgakov and Zamyatin
Joy: Cats, DH and close friends and taking countless photos of birds, deer in our back yard, trees, sky, clouds - all the things that help remind me that this really is a stunningly beautiful area we live in. And the five coats I've bought in the past week. Yes - desperation shopping.
Anna
Oh, I remember Magie Noir. I had a mini bottle of it which I enjoyed very much. Looking at that painting, I must agree with you about Burchfield. Thanks for the link to John Oliver. I made a list of charities.
ReplyDeleteReading: The Year of Lear, Shakespeare in 1606, after finishing Bridget Jones Baby in a day cause it stopped me from crying last week....
ReplyDeletePerfume: La Fille de Berlin cause roses are my comfort scent, but also Oro over Ambre Sultan, and 24 Faubourg
Food: Making bread, soup, and other comfort foods along with fresh salad from the garden
Music: My playlist of songs from the 60's
Frequently worn items: Just bought two beautiful hats made by Ignatius Hats
Bane: Yeah, right....
Joy: The cloth I am weaving, beauty of shimmery milkweed filaments, roses still blooming, lots...
Got hooked on The Crown, and loved the lipsticks that Claire Foy wore as the queen. Do you, or anyone, have any idea what brand/colors were used? The makeup was really well done, along with the clothes and everything else. Thanks for any ideas you may have!
DeleteBook: China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan. It falls into the delightfully silly, guilty pleasure category.
ReplyDeleteMusic: Mendelsohn's Symphony No. 3 "Scottish" -- one of those symphonies that brings rich visual images to my mind's eye while listening to it. It's a piece of music I can "see" as well as hear.
TV: The Blacklist, Lucifer, Elementary
Perfume: Guerlain's lovely Liu.
Makeup: NARS Give In Take for eyes and cheeks with a plum stained lip. I love Sarah Moon's other-wordly, soft-focused photography and this palette captures the essence of it perfectly.
Frequently Worn: Layers! Our weather is still up and down and all over the place.
Food: Veggie stew with a crusty whole grain baguette to soak up the juices.
Bane: Zero
Joy: Getting ready for the approaching holiday.
Anticipation: Spending lots of time with my sons, their special ladies, and their adorable dogs. Our house will be blessed with the whole lot of them for a week :-)
Wishlist: I can't really think of anything I need or want so let's go with world peace again.
Random Thought: My random thoughts all seem to focus on protestors and so I'll just zip my lip.
Book - The Beekeeper's Apprentice and also Dragonhaven by Robin McKinley, the first person teenage boy narrative is a bit annoying, but I need to disappear into fantasy, for the next four years.
ReplyDeleteMusic - Anything Goth.
TV - The Fall, Blacklist (James Spader!) and Goliath (BB Thornton is stellar).
Perfume - Vintage Magie Noire extrait. And I have a backup bottle.
Makeup - Dark dark red lips. Anything Ellis Faas.
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit Black tights with my Fiorintini & Baker boots.
Food - Lots of veggie sushi and miso soup.
Bane - Hormones, acne AND wrinkles? I'm not amused. O_o
Joy - My new employee.
Anticipation - the holiday break at University.
Wishlist - More money to donate to animal rescues, and a pomeranian rescue doggie, but my Smokey won't tolerate that. I'm sure he'd object, loudly and with claws out.
Random Thought - Is it 2020 yet?
Ah, the Mary Russell series! It's a delightful addition to the Sherlock Holmes genre. It was fun to watch the relationship between the two grow as they solved mystery after mystery. I hope you'll read the others in the series.
DeleteI've heard many the same comments, that the entire series is wonderful!
DeleteI'll order a few more as soon as I manage to wade through the five books I've just started! :)
Yesterday I finished reading Today Will Be Different. I might read it again, and I almost never read a book twice. My favorite snack, lunch, supper, dinner, what-have-you of the moment is a slice of good bread, usually something brown, well toasted topped with a schmear of humus, then chopped tomato and fresh basil or herbes de Provence. But now I want some cheese. Yummy.
