Currently- February 2016
Book
The other night I started reading The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. The story is heavily inspired by William and Kate, the authors are the ladies behind Go Fug Yourself, so you know I had to. Obviously, it's all fluff and froth, and quite irresistible.
Music
Cat Power- The Greatest. I was reminded how much I love this song when watching one of the things below.
TV
A few weeks ago the husband and I binge-watched The Red Oaks (Amazon. Loved it from the very first minute), and The Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt (Netflix, took an episode or two to really get into it). While waiting for the next season of both, as well as all the good stuff that's coming later in the season we started Grace & Frankie (Netflix) today, and it's wonderful. Network TV is mostly dead, but the stuff on the streaming services is worth not just the money, but the time you take to watch it.
Perfume
I woke up this morning craving orange blossom. Not neroli and nothing too heavy. I was so glad for the bottle of Houbigant Orangers en Fleurs. It was just perfect.
Makeup
All the lipsticks and duocrome eye shadows.
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit
My thickest, longest heavy cashmere scarf. I bought it a decade ago, and I'm sorry I didn't get a second one in black.
Food
Mint chocolate chip ice cream. The one from Van Leeuwen is wonderful because it's not too sweet and the chocolate is very very dark.
Bane
None.
Joy
I think the insomnia is over.
Anticipation
Tomorrow. It's going to warm up and hopefully the rain will be the end of the snow for this year.
Wishlist
There are a couple of things on my eBay watch list.
Random Thought For Presidents' Day
Sometimes (not often) I really miss the '90s.
How are you? What's on your list of loves and banes? Any wishes and recommendations?
Book(s)
ReplyDeleteAgatha Christie's detective novels in Spanish (getting ready for Madrid...)
Music
bob hund (going to see them live in March)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bIeYeiUqjk
TV
UEFA Champions League starts again today!
Perfume
The original versions of Helmut Lang fragrances: EdC, EdP and Cuiron. For evenings I chose Ormonde.
Makeup
Still stuck with my trusty pinkish red lippies for work, but for evening occasions I dared to wear deeper, darker lipstick shades: MAC Fashion Revival and Diva Antics (the kind of which I wore in my late teens, then it was Biba Pigalle) and to my great surprise and joy received many compliments. Apparently a dark lippie and white/grey hair isn't a no-no after all. The trick is to pick the right shade and use a light hand. For nails I picked dark Chanel shades: Vertigo and Rouge Noir.
Frequently worn item
These leggings http://blackmilkclothing.com/collections/leggings/products/courtisans-of-kikugawa-hwmf-leggings
(I must add I don't mistake them for trousers but rather wear them as tights with a dress or skirt and I wouldn't be caught dead in platform shoes)
Food
Salted caramel ice cream
Anticipation
Summer festivals: going to see P J Harvey and New Order live.
Those leggings are cool. I have a couple of black dresses that go well with them!
DeleteAnd I'm so jealous about Madrid. I want to go there (and Barcelona), but what's keeping me (and sending me back to Italy every time) is the food issue. I've heard it's incredibly hard to find vegetarian food as a tourist, unless you rent an apartment and cook yourself.
When I saw this, I thought immediately that you will like it https://www.instagram.com/p/BAfcVT1oS_u/
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it. Thanks, Amalia!
DeleteThe illustration at the top (so fabulous) - Rockwell Kent?
ReplyDeleteAll I know about the illustration is was done for the 1932 Industrial Exhibition in Copenhagen. I assumed it was by a European artist, but couldn't confirm or find a source. I do love Rockwell Kent's work, snowscapes and other.
DeletePerfume: Bingeing on various of Mandy's scents, especially on Vanilla Smoke. Such a great piece on her in the Sunday Times.
ReplyDeleteFood: Salmiakki (super salty licorice) - my late night treat of choice. Basically has become my version of a sleeping pill.
Outfit: Not regretting one single scarf or coat I bought this winter - every single one of them has helped give me the courage to go out and face the long string of expletives deleted frigid weather.
Anticipation: Seeing the first daffodils, violets and crocus come up. I'm spring cleaning our house like crazy as if somehow by doing this the weather gods will take note and speed up the arrival of warm weather. Wish I could find somewhere around here that sells cut lilies of the valley - extremely rare to even be able to find them in pots.
Music: Been listening to a lot of Richard Butler, Nick Drake and Jobim. And love Cat Power - thanks for that!
TV: Watching very little these days, but have been enjoying the Miss Fisher mysteries.
Reading: Colette's The Vagabond and Sarah Caudwell's The Sirens Sang of Murder.
Anna
I'll have to replant lilies of the valley this year. I think my little patch was irrevocably damaged last year when we had some work done in the back yard. And I love salty licorice. It's so calming.
DeleteMakeup-I have been loving all the new NARS spring colors. Also all the old NARS standbys. Trying Tatcha products for the first time. Venturing into some Benefit & Tarte items (especially Tarte brushes)and enjoying them very much. Oh, I got this beautiful Diorskin Nude Air Glowing Gardens Illuminating Powder in Glowing Pink (WHEW, dang) in the new Spring 2016 collection. Nothing really new in the other categories. Same old stuff.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sold on the NARS spring colors, but I rarely like spring collections and this year everything is even more pastel than usual. My older NARS things, both staples and special occasion colors are always a delight. The other day I was playing with Mad Mad World and decided to wear it again soon.
DeleteI'm not much for pastels either, but these particular colors are really pretty for me. The Banned Red lipstick is gorgeous, and the Rosecliff one is a pretty neutral on me. Instant Crash lip gloss is another neutral with shimmer! The only eye shadow I got was Kari. It doesn't show up until I use a damp brush, then it's soft & antique-y. This probably is not considered a Spring color, but I love the Goulue blush from Sephora. I just thought I'd describe my take on these colors so others could hear a first hand view.
DeleteExcellent description. No doubt they're beautiful. And I share your love of Goulue. I have it in the large palette and it's probably my most used.
DeleteBook: after binge-reading historical fiction set mostly in ancient Rome for several months, having trouble re-focusing. starting the Book of Amber. wish it was an ebook -- it's huge and heavy. never thought I'd hear myself say that.
ReplyDeleteMusic: lots of Ali Farka Toure. some Luther Dickinson.
TV: my son's Mythbusters
Perfume: after many years of not wearing any scent because I never smelled anything I liked in department stores, I ordered (pretty randomly) some samples from Indigo Perfumery. A new experience!
Makeup: recent weather and staying-at-homeness has me on an unusual makeup minimalism streak. Liking my new NARS L'Amour, Toujours L'Amour and Urban Decay Urban Spectrum palettes when I do make an effort, however. Lipstick always, every day. Liking bright pinks at the moment.
Frequently worn item/outfit: boots. I finally have boots that fit my severely skinny feet. knee-high by Walking Cradles. Mid-calf by David Tate. hiking boots by L.L.Bean (that they sadly no longer make). and scarves. some great winter silk scarf buys in the Nordstrom men's department on sale.
Food: homemade cookies -- coconut pecan oatmeal, peanut-peanut butter, chocolate chip.
Bane: finding pants and skirts that fit when my waist is a size 8 and my hips are a size 2.
Joy: re-connecting with an old friend.
Anticipation: I'm going to go back to school and get my esthetician's license!
Wishlist: a great single-breasted trench coat, maybe in a black & white plaid (but not 100% polyester); a great leather jacket, in gray on midnight blue with silver hardware; more colorful silk scarves. nail polish remover that doesn't destroy my nails.
I never thought I'd become a fan of eBooks, but they've changed my life. Nothing beats the convenience, the ability to carry dozens and dozens of books with me everywhere, and the gift of reading at night without turning on the light.
DeleteBook
ReplyDeleteI have so many books right now that I've started but need to finish. I don't even know where to begin. I've been enjoying "War Paint" which is about Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein.
Music
I may be your only reader/friend who cares about Kanye...I'm desperate to sit and give The Life of Pablo a real listen.
TV
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is back, thank goodness!
Perfume
Helmut Lang EDP and Il Profumo Musc Bleu. Give me all of the beautiful musky things! You also have me craving some Shalimar Eau Legere now =/
Makeup
All of the liquid lipsticks, all of them. All of the nude lip liners. ALL OF THE CHEAP THINGS! Just gimmeh!
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit
My boots all need to be re-heeled from how much I've been wearing them. Also, I just can't get enough of H&M thin sweaters and pima cotton tanks. I love layering.
Food
Soup. Don't care what kind, just give me soup.
Bane
Being sick still. I hate my immune system.
Joy
New things to play with and a fairly clean apartment. And new shower gel!
Anticipation
Sunday, because I'm off and I hope to have a productive day! And my bottle of Les Nereides Fleur Poudree de Musc, whenever it arrives.
Wishlist
Er, Shalimar Eau Legere now. AdP Iris Nobile Sublime.
Random Thought For Presidents' Day
I always miss the 90s.
Thanks for reminding me about "War Paint". The kindle edition is downloading as we speak.
DeleteAnd I think tomorrow we're going to get down to my vault and have a look at what can be found there.
