FotD: Makeup On A Bad Skin Day

If I look grumpy in the photos it's because despite appearances to the contrary I haven't been indulging in my favorite coconut sticky rice (or anything containing coconut, as far as I knew). Yet I had a major skin reaction a couple of days earlier. It was already fading at that point (Benadryl and salycilic acid), but the area around my mouth and chin was still taking the fun out of applying makeup. So I reverted to my trusted emergency plan and did what I could. I find it amusing and telling that I posted about this issue two years ago nearly to the day. 'Tis the season and all that.

It wasn't my finest hour, but the Husband and I were just going to the movies (the new Star Wars, what else?). It was going to be dark, anyway, and I was about to put on my glasses and the 3D goggles over them (bringing sexy back). We all survived.

Face
I didn't use foundation all over. Instead, I applied YSL Touche Eclat Blur Primer on my entire face and Le Metier de Beaute Peau Vierge (the tinted moisturizer, shade #2) around my mouth and chin using fingers. I did my best to mask major blemishes with my Cle de Peau concealer (Almond), but was mostly concerned about keeping it in place and kind of even, so powder was my friend (Laura Geller Baked Setting Powder in Medium, applied with a small brush where needed). For the most part, I left my face alone. It thanked me later.

Eyes
NARS eye primer
I went for a somewhat exaggerated (because of the glasses) brown smoky eye using MAC Constructivist Paint Pot all over the lid and two eye shadows from the Make Up For Ever 15 Artist Shadow Palette. I tightlined with the new(ish) Lancome Drama Liquid Pencil in Noir Intense, and finished with Lancome Grandiose mascara.

Brows
A quick touch of Shu Uemura pencil in Seal Brown 02.

Cheeks
Surratt Artistique Blush in La Vie En Rose 3

Lips
I went against my own rule. I started with NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien (a multi-repurchase), but I felt drab and washed out so I added a (very small) touch of NARS Cruella (from the Velvet Matte pencil range). It did the trick.

Other stuff
Vintage necklace. I think it's mid-century Norwegian.

  1. With those eyes, who would even notice the very well-concealed breakout? Have you lost weight? Or are you...oh, what do you call it? Contouring? Sorry for being so personal. :( You look great.

  2. I have had spots on my chin without interruption - but very much with eruption! - for 41 years now, and am heartily fed up. Interestingly I experimented for the very first time today with a tinted moisturiser from Nars I found a sample of, and it felt much nicer than the foundations I usually wear (Clarins or No 7). I am also going to investigate concealers, as I only have a little blemish covering stick. Your dramatic eyes definitely distract any onlookers!

  3. I like it! It did not look like you have a bad skin day. You still look amazing.

  4. Your bad skin day looks like one of my good skin days. I think you did a lovely look.To be honest the first two things I noticed were the lip color (beautiful!) and the vintage necklace. I feel good that I have those two pencils, I will have to try them together. Ever since I hit a "certain age", I've been dealing with blemishes and whiskers on my chin. Still experimenting with ways to conceal or tone it down without exacerbating it.

  5. Well I think you look great because you used a light foundation over the problem areas..... how many times do I see the young ones with a thick layer of foundation all over the face trying to cover their pimples ! It makes your problem worse - oh youth! LOL
Love that lippie colour too. :)

  6. Thank you for having the courage to post (with photos!) about how to deal with skin problems, which we all have to deal with from time to time. Those two lip pencils look great together on you, I have them both and will have to try what you did!

  7. The light coverage is a great solution. Thanks. I have found the Skinceuticals Blemish and Age Defense the best treatment I have used for blemishes. I use it as a spot treatment as soon as I feel something coming on and my the spots are so much more short lived. If I didn't get redness with flushing I could now go without makeup most days. (P50 acid toning also helps to, for me)
