My latest find (actually it was the husband who spotted this on eBay) is this antique Art Nouveau brass letter and stamp holder. It only holds two palettes, but it's a great way to keep a couple of items that are in my current constant rotation (or being tested) within easy reach. I haven't figured out what to do with the tiny stamp compartment in the base (the lid lifts up), but it doesn't really matter. The main function is there, and I love it very much.
eBay and Etsy, as well as estate sales (antique stores tend to jack prices up too much) are a great place for cute storage solutions that look more interesting than the average Muji stuff (nevermind that all my vintage stuff stands proudly on top of several Ikea Alex units). Do you have any unusual makeup holders?
I used my great-grandmother's silver (plated) creamer and covered sugar bowl for makeup brushes & cotton balls.
ReplyDeleteThose antique silver plated sets definitely get a new lease on life as cosmetics holders. I love the idea.
DeleteA Kjaer Weis cream blush refill in the stamp compartment would be nice, a lip balm, or a finishing powder refill that fits, but I don't know about the powder falling around...
ReplyDeleteI'm still trying to find something small enough. There are three tiny stamp compartments inside, and so far nothing worked, but I'll figure it out.
DeleteI am essentially an equal opportunity accessories addict - I live for accessories not just for my wardrobe, but also for our home. Actually, it's especially bad when it comes to our home because I'm really almost indifferent to the large furniture pieces and have only spent a small fraction on them (and grudgingly at that) compared to what I spend on accessories for them. So you could guess that I can't resist great containers for makeup. I adore and collect Alvar Aalto vases and used several small clear ones (the large ones mostly contain my huge collection of drawer pulls) and a couple of his clear or white trays to hold mascaras, eye pencils and some lipsticks. I also have some white Jonathan Adler bird bowls and a couple of his adorable little elephant bowls for lipsticks and some face products. I've tried to keep my makeup containers all in clear glass or white just so that the colors of the products are accentuated and easy to see, but since I'm not wearing much makeup now, most of these have been converted to jewelry containers.
ReplyDeleteThat letter holder is absolutely gorgeous. If the stamp compartment isn't deep enough for a small makeup item, maybe you could just keep something like a photo in it or a piece of paper (ticket, etc.) from a great vacation in it.

Large furniture are essentially cat trampolines in this house, so I'm all about the (safely located) small stuff. I've been thinking of putting photos of my sister and her kids in the stamp compartments. I miss them dearly this week.
DeleteI use a large jewelry box as my makeup desk. The top compartments are great for makeup pens and pencils as well as my usual makeup while I can store a few eyeshadows of the season along with lip colours in the two drawers. When not in use, I just close the lid as the box looks like a stack of books.
ReplyDeleteThat's a fabulous setup. If I had a normal sized makeup collection I'd have probably gone that route.
DeleteSpeaking of Muji, would their tiny q-tips fit in the stamp compartment?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the idea. I'll have to check it out.
DeleteHow about a cream eyeshadow or two?
ReplyDeleteI use Diptyque candle jars when I finish burning the candle.
ReplyDeleteI missed this one too! That Art Nouveau letter holder is absolutely gorgeous!
