It's the tale-end of May, and I have no idea how that happened. House-guests, a short trip to Brimfield (quite successful), the Husband's birthday, my niece's birthday (how and when did she turn seven? SEVEN?). It's getting hot and stormy here, and the husband and I could really really use a cool and quiet weekend to ourselves, preferably with a good spa treatment. But let's get this in before June swallows us whole.
Book
And When She Was Good by Laura Lippman. The life of a suburban madam become a lot more complicated than she anticipated. I love Lippman's writing (read After I'm Gone when you get a chance). She has a knack for describing what happens to seemingly regular people under unusual circumstances.
Music
Short Movie by Laura Marling. As far as I'm concerned she can sing the NYC phone book. I'll still buy everything she does.
TV
Is there anything other than Game of Thrones? We still watch Orphan Black, but suspending our disbelief becomes a bit harder at times. And I want more screen time for Felix. Also, get Daario Naharis back to Ontario. I'm not sure he's long for Mereen the way things are going over there.
Perfume
Lalibela by Memo. I bought the bottle in Paris back in 2008. It's big, it's perfumy, and utterly lovely. I'm pretty happy that both Aedes, Luckyscent, and Neiman now stock them.
Makeup
I've gone a bit base-crazy, comparing and contrasting several new and not so new products. There's a post about it in our future. I may have ordered one from Japan (ask Lisa Eldridge).
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit
Dresses, long and short, in solid colors. They leave a lot more room for accessorizing.
Guilty Pleasure
Getting my nails done. At least I go to a well-established local salon that seems to be free of the depressing atmosphere uncovered by the New York Times. And I need my gel nails. They're the only thing that keeps my hands in a good shape.
Food
My favorite dessert, Mont Blanc, at Basta Pasta (17th street). It's an almondy thing that thankfully doesn't come in pints, or I'll never fit in my dresses ever again.
Bane
Meh. You know what? I can't complain when I have some of the awesomest friends both near and far, a husband who spoils me rotten, happy and healthy kittens of every size and color, and the roses are starting to bloom.
Joy
Asian skincare makes a visible difference.
Anticipation
June
Wishlist
Gathering as many of my friends as possible here this summer.

Joy: Ireland said a big, loud, undeniable "YES!" to love and marriage equality. Am hoping, wishing, and praying that the Supreme Court of the United States follows suit.
ReplyDeleteFragrance: stuck in a pleasant rut of Aramis, Iris Silver Mist, and Pi. Still a rut..and a pointless one.....I have lots of decants to try,
Food: waiting for locally grown fruit.
Books: Too many to list. Am enjoying Hissing Cousins, about Eleanor Roosevelt and Alice Roosevelt. Also reread The Family Man, by Elinor Lipman.
Music: Peter Gabriel's Secret World tour on YouTube.
Screamingly funny: Grace and Frankie on Netflix. Brilliant writing, excellent performances. Am waiting eagerly for the next season!
Pointless guilt that could be eliminated with just a little effort: several letters and a package to write or finish writing and slip into the mail.
Gratitude: a new antihistamine that dries up my nose and eyes without unpleasant side effects.
Lawrence and Rosa del Gata in Ohio.
well ... here I go -
ReplyDeleteTv ---- the new series Mapp & Lucia
Perfume is Mitsouko as its nearly winter here.
Makeup .... trying out a few foundations .. not sure about the new Laura Mercier or the new Urban Decay .

Wishlist .... my lottery ticket to get some sort of winning for the Vet bill !
Random Thought ..... I have really missed my two doggies .... pets really do keep you company - I experienced this today.
Lady Jicky - if you enjoy hot chocolate, have you tried Jacques Torres? His Hot chocolate - Wicked is stellar, featuring allspice, cinnamon, ground ancho chili peppers, and smoked, ground chipotle chili peppers! It is amazingly delicious, and decadent....
DeleteI too love Lalibela. It's funny though- I barely even notice the rose and incense. On me, it's all about the patchouli and coconut orchid. I find it quite sensual...

What Bella Noir Beauty said. Long time reader, first time commenter. Love your blog, its honest and funny reviews, great writing and beautiful discoveries (from the vintage illustrations to perfumes to Ms Marling over here)

Sadly nothing of my choosing (well sort of) as I'm busy writing my senior thesis for uni. Though a friend did lend me a pretty hilarious short stories book called "It's called a breakup because it's broken" for comic relief.
Music
Oddly enough - classical music. I mostly listen to music in my car for the moment and I get so sick of regular stations' constant commercial breaks that I tune in to a classical music station. Because virtually zero commercials and because soothing (see thesis comment above)
TV
Tardy for the party but watching the Mentalist, which has been sitting in our divx cabinet for a while now. Entertaining but feels lukewarm compared to the Sherlock Holmes series.
Perfume
Still wearing Byredo's Bal d'Afrique (insert starry-eyed kitten emoji) but I may get a new, more floral fragrance during one my thesis 'breakdown' days to cheer me up.
Makeup
My almost sister-in-law (my brother better propose sometime soon, she is awesome) came back from the US with quite a few products I can't get my paws on where I live: a Tarte blush and their Airbuki brush, a couple of Too Faced Melted Metals and MAC Ultimate lipstick in Marque.
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit
My larger pants since I have been anxiety-eating quite a bit recently.
Guilty Pleasure
Hmm not sure. Does a lot of beauty blog reading and Pinterest re-pinning count?
Food
Dried goji berries. Just a pinch in the morning before anything else. It's supposed to be a good antioxidant + loads of other benefits, it tastes good and requires no effort to prepare. Win-win.
Bane
Aside from the approaching final and thesis, peeling nails. I've taken a nail polish break to try and remedy it.
Joy
The makeup my SIL brought back from the US. And spoiling my patient and supportive husband on his birthday.
Anticipation
September
Wishlist
Loads of energy and passion to get a decent thesis done.
Random Thought
Thinking of trying the '5 tibetans rites' recommended by a friend's friend.
Have a great week everyone
Tigerlily
Can't believe May is over.
ReplyDeleteJoy/Gratitude: DH. After over 20 years of marriage I am unbelievably grateful to be married to this wonderful, incredibly kind man. Also the Irish vote, which literally brought me to tears and can still make my eyes well up with tears of joy thinking about it. Amazing. Oh, and then there are the choices this month from Patric chocolates - birthday wishes come true (DH and I both have our birthdays the third week of May, as well as our wedding anniversary that same week). Also all the Queen Anne's lace starting to bloom around here. I wish I'd had a wedding bouquet composed entirely of them and maybe a few dandelion seed pods, but, instead, I had iris.
Food: Grilled tomatoes with cheese. Blueberries.
Clothes: Floral print pants. They just make me happy.
TV: The Doctor Blake mysteries.
Perfume: Patou 1000 has gotten my attention again after many years of neglect. And, still, tons of vintage.
Bane: Health. Fears about health (for which meditation and vintage perfumes help significantly).
Random thought: Wish we had some way to soundproof our home from thunder - terrifies the children to an extreme (almost as much as the loud evil monsters aka lawn mowers) and our summers are full of afternoon storms. Am currently typing with three of our kids huddled next to me and on my lap - the other two are with DH - as a storm rolls by outside.
Anna
Book - Nothing sends me right now, unfortunately. I really wish the next book in the Song of Fire and Ice series was completed….
ReplyDeleteMusic - Lou Reed or Patti Smith.
TV - GOT is my whole world right now. I love a world where dragons exist.
Perfume - Anything and everything Iris or violet. I can’t seem to get enough. I also am wearing plenty of Indochine and Tauer's L'Air du desert marocain.
Makeup - I’m using less foundation but trying out different textures and finishes. I still think Chanel is my holy grail, LMdB is a close (very) second. Primer is my friend.. ;)
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit
Shirts with different patterns, and I’m branching out to try new colors too. Looking for jeans that are flattering and NOT having fun with this!
Guilty Pleasure
My home made frozen fruit creams. Not so guilty because they are pretty much coconut milk, and fruit with very little sugar added. I’d also add Indian food to my guilty pleasure list.
Food - My VitaMix is repaired and I’m back to making my home made soups and frozen fruit creams. I‘m in heaven, I can’t get enough of the honeydew/lime/kiwi made with coconut milk.
Bane - None, but don’t tell anyone lest the other shoe drop!
Joy - “Asian skincare makes a visible difference.” Any reviews coming?? I’m intrigued by Asian skin care!
Anticipation - My new person started and I am enjoying training her, very bright and eager to learn/work.
Wishlist Good health.
Random Thought A vacation sometime would be wonderful, I would love to visit Long Island in August.
