Currently- February 2015
I'm getting over a cold. Not even a particularly bad one, but just unpleasant enough. Cold medication is a wonderful thing breathing-wise, but they make me fall asleep All.The.Time. I haven't been this useless in ages (and also less than coherent, I strongly suspect). So I've been sleeping at odd hours, staying up to read late, and generally feeling out of it.
Book
Last night I finished reading Love Creeps by Amanda Filipacchi. I picked it up as I was looking for something cheerful after the (good but gloomy) Girl on the Train. I'm not sure what I think. Creeps is witty, surreal, and touching at times, but I can't say it cheered me up much.
Music
Peter Gabriel- Games Without Frontiers (Haven't heard this one in years, but was reminded because of the next item)
TV
We've been binge-watching The Americans. It gives me nightmares, but the early 80s nostalgia was almost pleasant. Also, I was raised by parents who immigrated from Eastern Europe, so there's something familiar about the Jennings family (no, my parents aren't and were never KGB agents. As far as I know. Right, Mom?)
Perfume
Ramon Monegal- Hand in Hand. I wasn't supposed to like it, seeing as in theory it's a rose/oud thing. But I'm in love.
Makeup
More cream eye shadows.
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit
A thick, slightly oversized belted sweater from Derek Lam for Neiman's line.
Guilty Pleasure
Salty Black Licorice by Jacobsen Salt. It's the real thing and I might be slightly addicted.
Food
Grilled cheese. The Husband has a new method for making it.
Bane
Other than the aforementioned cold I'm following Eileen's No Bane Zone.
Joy
My friends.
Anticipation
Thaw
Wishlist
Several Viseart eye shadow palettes. I'm waiting for them to get back in stock.
Random Thought
Please tell me that the Oscars are a Kanye-free zone.
How are you doing? Please share your loves, banes, recommendations, and random thoughts.
Art: Charles E. Burchfield, Street Vista in Winter, 1957-60
Ooh, please do share the new grilled cheese method! I love grilled cheese.
ReplyDeleteI am having an Andy Tauer rose scent love fest lately. And the love affair with Hourglass powders and blushes continues.
I just finished the first season of The Americans last week, so good. Totally enjoyed the 80's nostalgia, brought back so many memories.
ReplyDeleteHa! Kanye free! Love it :)
ReplyDeleteI second Tara C's request for the grilled cheese recipe/technique--we've been having winter weather for the past week, and grilled cheese has been tasting especially delicious. Hope you are feeling better--kitties are good for comfort and healing.
ReplyDeleteI vote for the grilled cheese recipe, it would go well with this horrible cold. I'm hoping to get one of the Viseart palettes as well when and if they come back in stock. I was thinking about the Paris one (puts me to thinking of going to Paris actually). Yes, we don't need that person running up on stage at the Oscars. oh well, happy weekend!

ReplyDeleteThe Inheritor by Laura Antoniou -- Although the Marketplace is fictional, the entire series is an accurate depiction of a commonly misunderstood lifestyle. Suck it, Fifty Shades.

Random Thought
I spend more time on my son's hair than I do on my daughters' and mine combined. He wears an electric lizard green Liberty mohawk. The dye job (and maintenance) alone is quite the project. It's a very odd look, but the kid pulls it off; and gets compliments all the time.
Hey Pink: I have to complement you on maintaining your son's hairstyle. Most parents would be in despair at his form of self-expression!
DeleteOh, where to start? I was quite ill physically through much of December and January, but as February wanes, I am improving. Severe infection (kidneys,) some skin things, and my blood sugar wasn't under best control.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I am healthier now than I have been in quite some time.
I have many blessings.......my second great-nephew arrived early, but healthy on December 31, 2014 (a squeaker for the tax year!)
I have a lovely new Toshiba laptop, after my 8 year old Toshiba laptop essentially died. However, I am NOT loving 8.1. Not even frenemies.
While I was in the hospital and nursing home, friends stepped up with care for Rosa del Gata, cards and visits, and gifts for me, and good thoughts for healing.
Scent: Guerlain decants from a kind friend. Still loving Imperiale, Heritage, Liu. Still unconvinced about Parurue.
Also getting lots of compliments on Jolie Madame.
Clothes: More than I'd like. I want to go outside not looking like Bib, The Michelin Man!
Library Book: "Why Don't You. . ." by the great Diana Vreeland.
Bane: Not being allowed to take Aspirin--future dental procedure, or Motrin. Tylenol does not help my arthritis a lot.
Disappointment: Being lactose intolerant!!!
Music: Hounds of Love by Kate Bush. Magical. Also known among my friends as "Puppies of Affection."
Book: "Dorothy Parker Drank Here", by Ellen Meister. To be out this coming Tuesday, February 24. I have already ordered (and with Christmas money,) paid for my copy. I am one of many mentioned in the acknowledgements...first name and last name! Ellen Meister's previous novel, "Farewell, Dorothy Parker," was a sparkling comedy-fantasy. I have high hopes.
Joy: Being home!
Lawrence (and Rosa del Gata) in deeply frozen Ohio
Gaia: I also wish for the Husband's grilled cheese method.
ReplyDeleteHave been seriously addicted to salty licorice since childhood. Heaven. But am suddenly overcome with a craving for another childhood addiction - salted dried Chinese plums (aka saladitos), which are sweetened with anise. And am adding my vote to the requests for the grilled cheese technique - sounds perfect for this weather.
ReplyDeletePerfume: Rochas Femme, Lanvin Scandal, Parfums d'Histoire 1740 and Fracas - they've been giving me the courage to go out into the cold this week.
Books: Am currently just a few pages from the end of Joseph O'Neill's Netherland. It's beautifully written, but for some reason I found it to be one of those books I can stand back and objectively admire, but that have a Teflon feel for me - I've got no attachment to them, no compulsion to procrastinate and go off and read them. Am about to start Lily King's Euphoria and Donna Leon's A Sea of Troubles - am in the mood for both a mystery and Venice.
Joy: We didn't lose power in the ice storm and, despite the frigid temps, there are daffodil shoots coming up all
through our neighborhood (am willfully refusing to think about what this latest ice storm may have done to them).
Craving: Clothes in cerulean blues and bright greens, also oranges and pinks. I don't normally wear many clothes in those colors, but recently have been feeling like absolutely nothing else will do - clearly another reaction to this weather.
Hope you are feeling better!
Anna
Book - About to begin The Fault in Our Stars, I've seen the movie but I hear the book is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteMusic - Love anything by Peter Gabriel, also listening to a lot of Sinead O' Connor and other 90s gems.
TV - I'm addicted to American Horror Story, (although it gives me nightmares).
Perfume - not much, I got in trouble at work with a perfume-phobe. When I do, it's Indochine or Shiseido's FdB.
Makeup - Any foundation with gentle illumination and medium coverage. Looking forward to wearing Spring collections.
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit - boring office attire, unfortunately.
Guilty Pleasure - Home made oatmeal toffee cookies (gluten free) with ginger ice cream.
Food - Too much food, unfortunately, I've gained weight. The Grilled cheese sounds delicious! I make mine with gruyere and gouda cheeses, frying it in a cast iron skillet (medium/hot), laying some butter down on the outside of both sides and then pushing some grated parmesan or romano - then frying it until golden and caramelized on both sides. *Heavenly*
My other new food addiction is a New England Spider cake, which is a type of sweet cornbread with a layer of heavy whipping cream in the middle, I add a touch of sugar and vanilla, drizzle maple syrup over the top when serving. Simple and delicious!
Bane - I've had a terrible cold, finally finished after four weeks and now it's allergy season, ugh.
Joy - My kitties, Gino and Smoky.
Anticipation - The end of allergy season!
Wishlist - Several Viseart eye shadow palettes. I'm waiting for them to get back in stock.
Random Thought - Couldn't agree more on the Kanye-free Oscar zone. I do hope I'll see Tilda Swinton, she is always so interesting!
Elizabeth: I'm happy your cold is over but I feel your pain about allergy season!
DeleteI should mention, the Viseart eye shadow palette I'm most enamored with is the Sultry Muse, it has several warm gold, brown/rusty brown and bronze tones that will look fabulous paired with a teal blue liner for summer.
ReplyDeleteI hope you shake your cold soon! Great entry--had me nodding my head in several places. I am of Finnish descent, so I was born addicted to salty black licorice. YUM! I am halfway through Girl on the Train and was about to post to a fragrance FB group for book recs. I think I'll get a sample of Love Creeps. And finally, fingers crossed for a Kanye-free Oscars!
ReplyDeleteBlack Licorice. I have now visited the Jacobsen Salt website. A craving for the real thing has been triggered.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your reviews! I am looking for a "signature" scent. Your reviews are do detailed and descriptive. I have ordered some samples from Luckyscent based on some of your reviews.
Book
ReplyDeleteI’m almost done with 11/22/63 by Stephen King – it’s for book club and while it could use some editing, and certainly has its share of clunky phrasing, the story is engrossing.
TV
Finishing up Sons of Anarchy two episodes left – yikes!) and catching up on The Walking Dead. What can I say, I like cheesy, yet stress-inducing, media.
Perfume
I’ve been bouncing around all my samples lately, and when I turn to my full bottles I pick up the “embarrassing but I love it” Vince Camuto – it’s so fun and sweet. I guess I’m going a little stir crazy from the cold.
Makeup
Coppery pinks for the eyes.
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit
I finally broke down and bought some leggings. I change into them almost immediately after work. They’re so cozy this time of year. I don’t wear them out of the house though – not my style at all.
Guilty Pleasure
I’ve been eating chocolate chips straight from the bag lately. Oops…
Food
Keeping warm with Indian feasts on the weekends. Madhur Jaffrey’s book Indian Cooking is phenomenal and authentic, but very accessible for westerners. I haven’t had a dud from it yet.
Bane
What the cold and dry air is doing to my skin!
Joy
My puppy (well really, she’s nine). We had a health scare with her recently, but she’s in the clear now. She really is family.
Anticipation
Walking the dog while wearing a tank top. I’m not usually one to hurry a season along, but I want warmth!
Wishlist
I lost a brand new Bobbi Brown lipstick, so I wish I’d find it. I also wouldn’t mind a gift box of Lush bath products…
