My top pick is to not have any winter, at least not winter as we know it here in the North East. But I do love dark and stormy perfumes, especially when applied in quantities that would get one horrified looks on warmer times. Here are my top ten perfume picks for the season that refuses to go away, divided into several categories:
Keep Me Warm- this is self explanatory. Smoldering perfumes that radiate heat.
Annick Goutal- Ambre Fetiche
Vero Profumo- Onda
Cozy Nights at Home (aka "my cabin fever is about to make me go postal"). Soft and cuddly perfumes to take the edge off.
Parfumerie Generale- Felanilla
Givenchy- Organza Indecence
Anywhere But Here. I can close my eyes and pretend that I'm not in Narnia, NJ.
Les Nez-Manoumalia
Mona di Orio- Eau Absolue
If You Can't Beat Them (perfumes that evoke the weather). Crisp air, crunchy snow under your feet.
Chanel No.19
Hermes- Hiris
As Picked By The Husband:
Slumberhouse- Ore. Chocolate & booze from the Pacific Northwest.
Guerlain- Songe d'un Bois d'Été. A spicy smoky leather oud.
Please visit Bois de Jasmin, Grain de Musc, Now Smell This, and Perfume Posse for more winter perfume picks.

No Shalimar? :(
ReplyDeleteOh, Shalimar is my eternal companion, as well as a few others like Tauer LdDM.
DeleteI don't have summer/winter perfumes, to be honest. But I like to wear Cuir de Russie with my knee-high boots.
ReplyDeleteI'm not all that good with the seasonal thing, either. But I do love CdR, even if it's one of my lighter leather scents.
DeleteI actually love to wear my happy citrus and fruityflorals in winter. They make me smile.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, Anon. I've been known to spray myself silly with Eau d'Hadrien and pretend I'm on a sunny vacation.
DeleteI'm a guy, so maybe I'm doing it all wrong, but my winter frag is Frederic Malle French Lover. Jon.
ReplyDeleteJon, you can't be doing it wrong with French Lover. Utterly impossible.
DeleteI think of Chanel No 19, which I love, as a spring scent, not a winter scent. On my skin the warmth of the flowers seems to come through much more than it does on most other people. Regardless, I love it any time of year.
ReplyDeleteThis winter I can't get enough of Musc Ravageur, 5 o'clock au Gingembre, Dries van Noten, and now--thanks to you--Silk Way. I think I've used up half the bottle since I got it yesterday. ;)
I'm still tickled pink about Silk Way: both for the perfume itself and for all my readers who discovered it here and are now enjoying it with me.
DeleteI'm ambivalent about winter in that I think it's incredibly beautiful (adore taking pictures in the winter) and winter gives me a lot of excuses for feeding my scarf addiction (and something of a coat/jacket addiction as well), but my body *hates* it. And I hate the short days, hate grey, dark, wet days. Am always mystified by the kids at the nearby campus who appear to be completely immune to any sensation of painful cold and go out in sub freezing temps without even a jacket on. I think some of the guys are protected by surrounding themselves in *enormous* bubbles of body spray or cologne - enough to keep the cold and all living beings with a sense of smell away for a radius of at least 20 feet.
ReplyDeleteLove your list. Felanilla is another scent you've reminded me of that I absolutely adore, but haven't worn for a while due to other scents having elbowed their way in front of it. I tend to wear my favorite perfumes year round, but winter sees the most tropical themed scents and a tendency to crave warm comfort scents to the same degree that an alcoholic might crave a stiff drink.
Anna
Anna, your comments are always such a joy! I love getting to know you through them, bit by bit.
DeleteI grew up in a hot and humid climate which I hated with a vengeance. As a matter of fact, winter used to be my favorite season. Hard to believe now. I know what you mean about the beauty. I get it. I think of Moominland Midwinter and I smile. But like you, my body suffers. I keep the house at 75 degrees but somehow it just never feels good. The chill is in my bones, and the short dark days affect my spirit. Perfume is a big comfort, though. As are cats, beautiful coats, and cheese.
I love wearing Tom Ford's Tuscan Leather in the winter. The very cold (Arctic blasts here in Montreal) weather seems to bring out the best in it for me. I do combine it with a softer body lotion, usually Jo Malone's French Lime Blossom. It's the only thing about really cold weather that I look forward to.
