One of the byproducts of award season is the avalanche of "Get the Look" emails bloggers start receiving within minutes of any red carpet show. Basically, we get massive amounts of PR material before Ryan Seacrest makes his first gaffe, and if we're lucky most of it actually has to do withe the celebrities we're watching. It's not guaranteed: I just trashed a bunch of emails that claim "the way to get this celeb's perfect skin is to take this supplement!", or "this actress looks like she's wearing XYZ! Tell your readers to buy it now!" (she wasn't). This silliness aside, I'll save you the how-to for Lupita Nyong'o's hair (I'm not kidding, and it didn't include "being born as gorgeous as Lupita", or all the drugstore hairspray stuff (did you know that
However, two of the makeup breakdowns I got were interesting enough to share for different reasons, so here they are: Amber Heard and Cate Blanchett.
I'm not sure if Amber Heard would have gotten as much attention if she weren't Johnny Depp's girlfriend, but she is a very pretty woman. Her makeup was done by Matthew VanLeeuwen for Hourglass Cosmetics, and the Get-the-Look email was the best and most detailed I've seen this season, not to mention that the products are among my personal favorites (links go to my own swatches and reviews when applicable). I also liked that the makeup artist was honest about his use of false lashes and didn't attribute it all to his mascara applying skills.
COMPLEXION:
Amber's skin was moisturized with Cle de Peau Gentle Nourishing Emulsion, then primed with Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum. The base color was created with Hourglass Hidden Corrective Concealer in Warm, and followed with Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup in Light Beige.
BROWS:
Amber's brows were defined with Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Soft Brunette. This proves my point about the need for more colors in this range. Amber was wearing Soft Brunette, which I also have. Dark Brunette was too dark for me, but my ideal color would be something in between, as I assure you that Amber Heard and I have absolutely nothing in common (including our taste in men, by the way).
EYES:
Here are the instructions, straight from the source:
"Apply the shell shade from the Hourglass Vol. 6 Eye Palette as a base color all over the lids. Follow with the bronze shimmer shade from Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Gypsy applied to the crease and under the eyes. Deepen the bronze with the brown shade from Vol. 6 Eye Palette applied to the outer corner, top and bottom of the lids. Line the eyes with a deep plum pencil like MAC Eye Kohl Prunella. “I also smudged the line with the black shadow from the palette,” he says. Apply a high-shine pearl shadow to the inner corner of the eye. Apply a coat of Hourglass Film Noir Mascara, allow to dry and curl lashes. Amplify with individual lashes like Ardell Duralash Flare in Medium Black.
CHEEKS:
For blush, the makeup artist used the sheer rose shade from Hourglass Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Sunset to the cheeks, and highlighted with the sheer champagne shade from Hourglass Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Bronze Light. Extra highlighting was achieved with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light, an opalescent sheer powder which mimics a moonlit glow. If you have the Ambient Palette, the middle powder, Incandescent Light, might work as well.
LIPS:
Lips were lined with Hourglass Trace Lip Liner in Bare and followed with Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Whisper, a golden pinky beige shimmer. I don't have these particular colors, but I'm sure one of the Femme Nude lip crayons with a neutral pink gloss can do the trick.

Now, the second Get-the-Look I have here is the makeup created for Cate Blanchett by Jeanine Lobell. Ms. Lobell is extremely picky about the assignments she takes (she can afford to do it; if you recall, she was the founder of Stila and sold the company to Estee Lauder years ago). Cate Blanchett is one of her favorite clients, and who can blame here? There are few actresses who are so awe-inspiring. When we have an A list makeup artist who's independent and has her pick out of the best products on the market working on an interesting and not 20 years old A list face, you get one of the best behind-the-scenes pick. Here are the products used:
FACE
SK-II Facial Treatment Mask - Jeanine prepped Cate's skin with this while she was getting her nails done (I think Cate Blanchett is the face of SK-II, and she's never been shy about her love for their products).
NARS Highlighting Blush in Love.
Lancôme Translucence Mattifying Silky Press Powder.
Jeanine layered both powders in order to highlight Cate's defined cheekbones.
EYES
Lancôme Hypnôse Waterproof Custom Volume Mascara - Jeanine piled on layers and layers to both the top and bottom lash line, combined with individual flares, to create dramatic lashes.
Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in Intuition and Illusion D'Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Emervielle - By blending the pinky-beige and goldy-beige shades and dusting them from the lid to the lash line, in addition to adding a pop of Emervielle to the lid, Jeanine was able to create dimension without using any liners.
NARS Brow Perfector and Brow Gel - Jeanine created a defined but not too harsh brow.
LIPS
Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy Lipstick in #502 Scarlatto and #509 Boudoir - Jeanine layered #509 Boudoir (a nude rose) on top of 502 #Scarlatto (a raspberry rose).
Thanks for these. I had to laugh at the e-mail about Lupita Nyong'o's hair, though I would love to read a make up breakdown for her look last night. The golden shimmer eyeshadow and subtle blue liner were very flattering, but else did the MUA use, I wonder?
ReplyDeleteI found makeup in the last GG pretty boring, Amber Heard was nice but still nothing special. Cate Blanchet is always elegant and flawless, I really love her parsimonious looks.
ReplyDeleteGlad you explained who Amber was, I had no idea. I like her makeup and of course Cate Blanchett.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting these. Two beautiful actresses. Of course, they both have freat bone structure and immaculate skin as a starting point. As someone who suffers from rosacea (which seems to slowly getting worse with age, despite the best efforts of my derm) I'd be delighted to have such beautiful skin.
