Book
I started reading the new Bridget Jones book, but right now I'm more interested in a non-fiction I just got, Courtesans by Katie Hickman. I was researching courtesans a couple of weeks ago for the Worth perfume review and was fascinated with these women.
Music
Wilco- How to Fight Loneliness
TV
We're binge watching shows we've DVRed but haven't touched since the season started. Already done with the Good Wife and Carrie Diaries.
Perfume
Etat Libre d'Orange- Fin du Monde. I'm completely taken with it. So much so that the husband got me a bottle on the spot.
Makeup
Back to basics: liquid eyeliner and red lipstick.
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit
Socks. 'tis the season.
Food
Nuts. Raw almonds and pecans.
Guilty Pleasure
Cranking up the heat just a little higher until the cats and I are truly toasty.
Bane
No matter what I do, my back isn't happy.
Joy
I know I'm repeating myself, but this sweet face and the way he's adjusted and become part of the family. We needed him just as much as he needed us.
Anticipation
A new year. Much needed.
Wishlist
Mostly things that have to do with this blog and its future. And a bottle of Roja Dove Diaghilev.
Random Thought
I'll never understand a thing about Kanye. And I'm perfectly fine with it.
How are you? Please share your thoughts, recommendations, banes and joys!
Art: Geza Farago- Slim Woman with a Cat, 1913
Bob has such an incredibly lovable face and his fur looks just exceptionally soft. So very glad you found each other. There can never be too much repetition when it comes to feline children.
ReplyDeleteCurrently reading Edmund Crispin's The Case of the Gilded Fly and finally getting around to a bio of Diana Vreeland I've been meaning to get to for about five centuries now.
In a good mood tonight since DH and the feline kids are all in contentment mode. Just showed DH the You Tube prequel to the 3rd season of BBC's Sherlock and it made him absurdly happy since we didn't think they would do another season. Also feeling good since our pet store got a new supply of peacock feathers in today. Two of our children are purring in extreme contentment on my desk as I write this after a nicely vigorous game of chasing one and basically destroying it in a single session. There are no toys I can buy them that they love as much as peacock feathers - we basically go into code red crisis mode when we run too low on them and that happens all too frequently since peacock feathers are not exactly meant to survive multiple pouncings, swats and triumphant mangling.
Hope you find something which can help with your back.
Anna
Thanks, Anna. I'm fascinated by the peacock feather idea. Will have to try it with my sweet critters.
DeleteIf that incredibly sweet face is anything to go by, Bob is One Very Happy (and lucky!) Cat. I've always thought that you don't find cats so much as they find you.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently immersed in (submerged might be a better word) Joyce Carol Oates' The Accursed. It's quite a ride! And when I'm not reading, I'm watching Showtime's Masters of Sex on Netflix on the recommendation of a friend. At least as thought-provoking as Mad Men, and I can't wait for that to return, either.
Note to self: Stop making ganache-covered chocolate brownies. Or suffer the consequences!
For Christmas, I gifted myself with two Ellis Faas Hot Lips on the basis of your review. (Can't live without the EF concealer, and I blame you for that one, too! ;-) )I have a lot of PR ahead in 2014 and my image needs an upgrade. Might as well start with looking and feeling ...fabulous.
My Really Big Deal this year was the jump from blogger to author. It's been more unnerving than I thought.
Anticipating: The year ahead. It's going to turn my world upside down. And finally getting to NYC to say hello to all the friends I call family there.
Wishing... I had more time to write reviews. And for a bottle of Krigler Topaze Imperiale 13, which is slaying me these days. Roja Dove's Diaghilev (I have a sample doled out by micro-drop) can't be far behind...
I do hope your back gets better soon! But here's to all the thrills and spills ahead for 2014! And a hug for you, and Bob, too!
Sheila, I already bought your book and will start reading it promptly. Enjoy your Hot Lips and I'm eager to see you when you get to NYC!
Deletethat's one beautiful cat!
ReplyDeleteThank you :) He most certainly is-- a big chunk of handsome and immeasurable sweetness.
DeleteKatie Hickman wrote a book about diplomatic families that was surprisingly fascinating, so I'll have to check the library for the her courtesan book.
ReplyDeleteBob is one handsome cat.
Adding another book to my Amazon list.
DeleteIt just occurred to me why Bob's face seems familiar, he rather looks like those carved statues of Egyptian cats in the museum. He's very striking. I need to catch up on the Walking Dead but I hate when characters I like die so I am avoiding. Lol. I would like less Kanye Kim coverage in the world this year. Less odd couples and more interesting ones.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Evelyn. I was pretty close to add "a year without Kardashian Koverage" to my wishlist.
DeleteBook: The English Girl by Daniel Silva Sort of a political thriller , not really my thing but sticking with it for now.
ReplyDeleteMusic: IFC channel had the movie Amadeus on and it resulted in me digging out and blowing the dust off of the CD Soundtrack and reconnecting with an old friend I hadn't seen since I was 12.
TV: Older British show, Spaced, with a very young Simon Pegg
Perfume: Don't have any at the moment.
Make up: I am having a love affair with Bobbi Brown's Smokey Eye Kajal Liner. The Kohl formal brings me back to the 80's in a good way. It has it's flaws but I can live with them. I have never lined my upper lash line so effortlessly before.
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit: In Texas, can still get away with around the house shorts.
Food: Egg rolls and sweet and sour sauce for dipping.
Guilty Pleasure: More sleep
Bane: Job interviews
Joy: Chocolate
Anticipation: Traveling
Wishlist: Etat Libre d'Orange
Random Thought: Don't be depressed , carry on.
Good luck with your job interview(s). I wish you a lot of ELdO!

ReplyDeleteI'm almost done with Sheila's "Quantum Demonology" and having that 'I'm almost done with a book, what do I do?!' panic. Not sure what's next on the list. Need to take a trip to Strand to pick up some new books.
Music
Silence, mostly. Working retail during the holidays makes one hate all music.
TV
Nothing, again. No time for TV. Waiting for Valentine's Day for House of Cards Season 2.
Perfume
Etat Libre d'Orange Charogne (#1 on my wishlist!) and Uncle Serge's Un Bois Vanille, which solved my vanilla problem. Oh, and MFK Ciel de Gum.
Makeup
NYX Super-Skinny Liquid Eyeliner + whatever taupe I grab first. Dior lash primer under whatever mascara I grab first. Nude lips. The holidays made me lazy.
Frequently Worn Item/Outfit
Thank you Japan for Uniqlo Heat-Tech
Food
Cookies. So many cookies.
Guilty Pleasure
Reddit, as always.
Bane
I have no time to organize my sample and decant collection. Also, I miss cooking but have no desire to cook.
Joy
Sleep. Between working retail + being in the midst of a depressive episode, sleep is much welcome. Also, any rare time spent with friends has been so wonderful. Oh, and the stray cats who live in the park near me now trust me enough to let me pet them and feed them. So walking over to pet them has been lovely. I want to take them all home.
Anticipation
Elements. It's not even until February! Sigh. I should find something less far-off to be excited about.
Wishlist
ELdO Charogne and um...oh, a new cast-iron skillet! I miss cooking.
Random Thought
I wish I had peanut butter right now.
Joey, I can't imagine being all day in a Christmas music saturated environment. I'd be kicking random Santas and children after one such day.
DeleteBook
ReplyDeleteOnly 200 pages left of The Man Without Qualities by Robert Musil (will miss it after I've finished and will definitely read this one again!)
Music
I Am Kloot: Let It All In (my favourite tracks are These Days Are Mine and Hold Back the Night)
Perfume
La Myrrhe (+ Fille en Aiguilles, Arabie and Five O'Clock au Gingembre)
Makeup
It's been snowless and cloudy or rainy, which here up north means that the days aren't only short, but also grey and gloomy. Thus I've been into bright lippie and nails, MAC Lady Danger and Essie Clambake are like visual vitamin C andcheer me up.
Frequently Worn Item
Cherry Red Hair on Horsey Dr Martens
Food
Christmas goodies: cheeses and chocolates.
Wishlist
Ormonde Jayne Frangipani Absolute (I used up my sample in July)
My dormant desire for cherry red Docs has been reignited.
DeleteI had to chime in because we have a couple similarities going...
ReplyDeleteI too have been infatuated with La Fin du Monde and I'm close to getting a bottle, though Bijou Romantique is also calling out to me. Try layering LFdM with Tilda's Like This...it's wonderful!
My great joy was cooking Christmas dinner with my Mom, which I haven't done in years. I made this super yummy vegetarian dish:
http://mobile.eatingwell.com/recipes/roasted_red_peppers_stuffed_with_kale_rice.html
And I've been binge watching an Aussie TV show called, Offspring on Huluplus.
As far as makeup, I've been loving my l'oreal infallible eyeshadow in hourglass Beige. Seems to brighten up even the sleepiest of eyes.
I'm feeling very grateful at the end of 2013 that my Mom at 89 is thriving again, finally, after a few very rough years while my Dad was passing on. And my dog is also thriving at nearly 15 years! I'm grateful to be surrounded by their longevity and hoping it's contagious.
My Wishlist consists of a new iPad. Both my laptop and iPad are so old they crash consistently. I'm thinking I'll have to bite the bullet soon and fork out for one or the other.
Must go get socks and crank up the heat now...
That's wonderful about your mom (and doggie!). My mother doesn't let anyone near the kitchen when she's cooking, so I never got to cook with her (since we're both control freaks it's probably for the better).
DeleteI'll give layering the ELdOs a chance. I also like Bijou Romantique very much, but my next full bottle will be Noel au Balcon. Re-testing it this Christmas made me fall in love all over again.
