Only a few words, because I'm on a round two of this cold, which is making me cranky and very tired. The latter, though, could be also the result of last week, which was by and large really bad. We lost Buffy because of renal failure. If you've ever lost a beloved pet you know the feeling. I really don't want to talk about it. We also had to spend some time with Marigold at the vet because she needed another round of antibiotics. As you can imagine, it was a bit too much. But at the clinic we were introduced to Bob, a five year old orange/white tabby. Bob has quite a story, since he was rescued from the streets of Fort Lee, NJ, by no other than Whoopi Goldberg. She couldn't keep him, so Bob found himself being fostered at our local vet's, where he spent three week with no one being interested in him.
I already wanted to adopt an adult cat. First, to honor Buffy who was about one when we got her. But also because at barely 9 months, Marigold, Gemma, and Pippa are still very much kittens, with the endless energy that comes with it. Bouncing off the walls included. Bob, with his sweet and gentle disposition was perfect. He came home with us on Friday and has been quickly settling in. You can tell that he really wanted a home and is very happy to have one. Last night he already slept in bed with us. Sophie didn't seem to mind.
The name Bob came with him. It might not have been my first choice (I was thinking George, for both Clooney and the Prince of Cambridge. Or maybe Toby, just because). It seems to suit him, though, so I'm happy if he's happy.

ReplyDeleteSo much love for people who give adult rescues a chance. I got my two boys when they were 1 and 2 years old - nine years later I have a 10 and 11 year old who are just as kitten-ish as the day i rbought them home. Bob is so handsome and I'm so happy he got the join your family.
ReplyDeleteBob has such a wise and wonderful face and for some reason I'm totally taken by his incredibly sweet little nose. All our cats have been at least a year old and feral when we adopted them and brought them inside, but each of them adjusted fairly quickly and they are all now unbelievably affectionate, loving children - the greatest blessings in our lives. Anyway, I'm so very, very glad Bob's found a home with you. Oh, and I love the fact that that the background in that photo is color coordinated so nicely for him. :-) Excellent portrait.

Congratulations on Bob and my deepest sympathies over your loss. I lost 3 of mine last year and it was really difficult. I also took in two adult 10-year-old foster cats who have now become permanent and they are the sweetest kitties you could meet. Orange male tabbies are the best, I can tell he's a love.

Lucky, lucky Bob for finding such a wonderful home. I agree that sometimes one needs to skip the kitten stage…we adopted a pair of 1-year-old cats 4 years ago and have been so happy with them.

ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about Buffy. My parents lost the younger of their two cats to renal failure in January and I'm still sad thinking of him.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I adopted a senior cat in 2010 - an eight-pound mackerel tabby named Patches with a personality much bigger than she is. She was about ten when we got her, and I know that we won't have as long with her as a result, but she's awesome. I'm glad you found a good match for your family too. :)
He's very handsome! I love seeing people adopt adults pets. My 7-year old American Eskimo dog passed away last year due to renal failure so I understand the feeling. Best wishes to you & yours

ReplyDeletei am already in love. bob actually suits him, i think. glad you gave him a good home. i know he will return the favor of love many times over. gingers are awesome, and are a distinct breed of cat in my book. lots of fun, those redheads. and adult cats are fun to adopt - my last pair were 3 when i got them, and it was fun to learn all of their quirks.

ReplyDelete((Gaia)), I'm so deeply sorry to hear about Buffy, losing a furr baby is so hard. I agree about adopting older cats, it's nice to rescue an older kitty and give them a second chance at life. We got our Rocky when he was 9 and we're all glad for it.

My heart aches for your loss of dear Buffy (I just hate how renal disease takes our beloved kitties), but celebrates the arrival of Bob, who looks like a real gentle teddy. All our cats have been rescued, and repay us with such love. Get better soon.

ReplyDeleteAbout the cold you can't seem to shake, last winter I had a" three month" cold. Never had had that before.
I 'm a firm believer in the benefits of honey, so this year I'm eating a spoon of Manuka honey every day since late august.The honey is also great for use on small wounds, chapped lips etc ( I'm not affiliated with any honey producing company)

ReplyDeleteBob looks like the perfect FOT (Friendly Orange Tabby), conCATulations! My condolences on Buffy, I lost my Zoe to renal failure in May so I can definitely sympathize, it is so hard to see them decline.

ReplyDeleteI am sorry for your loss, I take the loss of a fur person very hard. Bob looks just great, I'm so happy he's found a good home! I adopted an orange and white kitty a few years ago and he is one of the most affectionate, demonstrative cats I've ever had. -- Annunziata

ReplyDeleteI know all too well the heartache of losing a beloved animal companion. My 19 year cat Toodie died in June. Three years ago her elderly owner keeled over with a heart attack and Toodie was going to be dropped off at a shelter by the executors of the estate. I heard about her and took her sight unseen. She had been feral for years and gradually moved in with the elderly woman, who loved her dearly. Bravo to you and your husband for rescuing cats. My other three cats are all rescues as well. Buffy was very lucky to have spent her life w/ you and your husband. And the same goes for Bob. He's got a VERY cool and mellow vibe, btw.
