spicy Perfumes To Celebrate Thanksgiving

This list of spicy perfumes to celebrate Thanksgiving was the Husband's idea. Our turkey-free Thanksgiving meal is on his mind, and while there won't be a bird on the table, spices are very much what it's about. Once we started to discuss the perfumes to include here it became clear that the obvious choice is Serge Lutens.  I can't help it: these are my favorites. But there are more wonderful choices out there and I tried to include a thing or two that are less expected along with a modern classic or three.

  • Etat Libre d'Orange- Like This (Tilda Swinton). This pumpkin pie perfume will be part of similar lists till the end of days. That's actually a very good thing.
  • Serge Lutens- Rousse. Perhaps the ultimate in cinnamon, warmth, and autumn leaves.
  • Serge Lutens- Five  O'clock au Gingembre. Spicy pastries, afternoon tea, and the coziness of the season.
  • Serge Lutens- Arabie. The last one, I promise. Arabie is not exactly pilgrim material, but it's the spiciest and most evocative fragrance in this genre.
  • Jo Malone Nutmeg & Ginger. Jo Malone perfumes might be more about the flowers and the atmosphere of English cottage gardens, but Nutmeg & Ginger is an example of an easy-to-wear spicy fragrance that doesn't take over the entire room.
  • Frapin Caravelle Epicee. Frapin has several options that I could have included here (the boozy 1697 is also incredibly spicy and satisfying), but Caravelle Epicee has it all, from pepper to coriander, and a cashmere sweater dry-down.
  • DSH Perfumes Épices d’Hiver- I had a hard time picking from the many gorgeous options Dawn Spencer Hurwitz offers, but  Épices d’Hiver on all  its pepper-vanilla-incense (and a lot more) is just what I'm craving right now.
  • CB I Hate Perfume- M3 November. A bit too obvious? Maybe. But this is Thanksgiving in a bottle, and Christopher Brosius is the master of creating an aromatic picture right there on your skin.
  • Parfum d'Empire- Aziyade. This cumin, cardamom, and cinnamon bomb is related to Arabie, and is probably more India than Plymouth. still fabulous, though.
  • Annick Goutal- Sables. With a prominent immortelle note, this classic masculine from Annick Goutal is very maple-like. It's also peppery, honeyed, and just smoky enough to keep it interesting.
What would you add to the list? What perfume will you wear on Thanksgiving day?

  1. Dries van Noten by Frederic Malle. It's supposedly inspired by Belgian cookies and there's certainly a bit of vanilla, cinnamon and speculoos. I love it. I live in the Netherlands so won't be elebrating Thanksgiving though!

  2. Very nice list! Love the shout-out to Arabie. On Thursday, I think I will wear the original Mauboussin Pour Femme (in the tetrahydral bottle) - even though I've already had my Thanksgiving, as a Canuck.

  3. I was planning to wear SL Five O'clock au Gingembre (my Thanksgiving staple), but now Bella has me thinking about Dries van Noten. I guess I'll make the decision between the two on Thursday morning. All of your choices sound delicious, though--I think I'll let them inspire me for the next few weeks! I love spicy/comforting scents when it's cold, and boy is it cold now.

  4. I'll be wearing Roberto Cavalli Oro, for its warm, baked-apple smell. Although I'm wishing I had some Like This, as I have to skip the pumpkin pie this year.

    1. I was going to mention this one! I think it smells like eggnog. Theorema is another great choice.

  5. The other day I had just spritzed SL Chergui and my son (who's 4) commented, "Mmmm, what's that pumpkin pie smell?" Unfortunately, it either doesn't last with my skin chemistry or I'm anosmic to the mid and base notes.

  6. I will be wearing Kenzo Jungle Elephant. I've been wearing it a lot lately and love it.

  7. Spicy perfumes are in my regular rotation all year round (love every perfume on your list), but at this time of the year they're almost like essential remedies to keep me from sinking into cold weather blues. Wearing Diptyque's Eau Lente today and it's perfect, but I'm still having trouble (a lot) deciding what to wear for Thanksgiving. As usual, we're having a decidedly nontraditional dinner, so I thought I might balance that out with a spicy vintage perfume like L'Origan or Weil Zibeline (parfum version). But for personal association reasons I've also really been considering DHS Mahjoun or Cimabue, Dinner by Bobo and Aftelier's Memento. Oh, and MPG Secret Melange or Agraria Bitter Orange (both layered w/ MPG Santal) are also on my mind.

  8. Coco by Chanel - the original, not its flankers, and I prefer the EdP to the EdT. It's a spicy, warm Oriental which is perfect for the colder weather of late fall and early winter.

  9. My favorite spicy perfumes are Theorema by Fendi and Nuits Enchantees by Laura Mercier, they epitomize Thanksgiving holidays and family. Both bloom beautifully in cool weather...

  10. Botrytis is a shared / unisex perfume by Ginestet. Rich, dried fruit and spices. Just lovely.
