I might have figured out why Anna Dello Russo bothers me so much. It's not just that she's trying way (way way) too hard. The thing is that Ms. Dello Russo is a fashion editor. A very senior one. She's in Paris for Fashion Week sitting front row at the shows that are supposed to be all about the designers and their vision. But instead, Anna Dello Russo is there to make sure everyone notices her and then some. I get that she's seeking attention; that's obvious. But this behavior from the editor-at-large of Vogue Japan is as tacky as some of her fashion choices.

That first dress is Scary. Very Scary.

She looks trapped and unhappy!
ReplyDeleteShe looks like crap. There are myriad ways to look more sophisticated and fashion forward than she exhibits.
ReplyDeleteI'm envisioning Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous...
ReplyDeletePatsy was better looking.
DeleteLooking at the pictures before I read your post I thought, 'try hard' too. Overdressing (or underdressing in her skin showing case) does not make you cool, but can make you look pathetic especially at her age. Looking effortlessly chic is so much more appealing than these looks.
ReplyDelete"Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance."~Coco Chanel
I think someone needs to give her something to eat. She is scary skinny.
ReplyDeleteShe looks like a man in drag.
ReplyDeleteTransgender.
DeleteI just imagine Anna Wintour beating her with a baguette.
ReplyDeleteQue espanto! Abuelita se puso los vestidos de sus nietas!! Something like: Grandma stole her grandaughters' dresses...... Patetico
ReplyDeleteWrinkly knees give her age away. She really should consider covering them up with longer lengths.
ReplyDeleteUh oh. Mom got into the Thanksgiving play costumes.
ReplyDeleteYes. And she is ugly.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm just jealous. She's not pretty yet she's got this amazing fashion job IN JAPAN. The energy and discipine that takes are hard to imagine. If she wants to show off those thighs in fantasy designer clothing, I don't blame her. nozknoz
ReplyDeleteI feel absolved, now and forever, of any guilt I've felt at sallying forth into the world (up in the country, I might add) in jeans and casual tops with minimal makeup. If this is an arbiter elegantiae, I'm Marie of Romania. -- Annunziata
ReplyDeleteI've always thought what Iron Maiden said above -- that ADR looks like a man in drag. I have never understood the worship. She looks ridiculous, which at our age is inexcusable.
ReplyDeleteMarsi
I really thought you had posted something about a Sci Fi convention with the look of those outfits. oh dear.
ReplyDeleteThe message I'm receiving from her is that it's not ok for women to be "of a certain age" and it's not ok to be of a healthy weight. I have to believe she puts this message into her work, too. All part of the reason we have anorexic models and young women who read fashion magazines. She looks neither dignified nor healthy.
ReplyDeletehuh? I'm not getting that message from her - I'm getting that message from some of the commentators here. Why is it inappropriate for a woman over a certain age to dress in a certain way? And there is a wide range of healthy body types which include being very thin.....
DeleteI can understand disliking her style - though I actually think it's quite fun and obviously inspired by a lot of Italian fashion - but I find the body-snarking and age-snarking in the comments here pretty inappropriate.
yeh, me too: the comments only suggest inner insecurity about ageing and I love the fact she shows her un-plastic-surgery knees for it!..I agree it's an Italian thing to go glam and age might be less of a 'problem' than in America. Why do Americans always wanna 'fix' things. She's absolutely an exhibitionist but who gives her the front row and attention anyway?? It's a circus of voyeurism & exhibitionism and Anna delightfully takes part in it
DeleteSeriously, is it a GUY?
ReplyDeleteShe's not beautiful but she's not ugly. IMHO, she's very average looking. But she went way off the reservation dressing like someone 20 years younger. She looks her age and I agree with the other commenters; she looks just plain ridiculous. Maybe she doesn't have anyone to tell her how wrong she looks......or if she's anything like Anna Wintour, they're just scared to tell her.
ReplyDeleteShe looks like a fashion victim.
ReplyDeleteHer clothes are obviously ridiculous, but I just cannot get past her botox and probably loads of other "work". That's what gives her her alien man appearance and what just makes everything else irrelevant. How so is this face better than a normal 50? 60? ?? year old woman with smile lines and crinkly eyes? NOT.
ReplyDeleteShe looks like a caricature...
ReplyDeleteI think about all the fashion people out there who are 'ridiculous' dressers, including 'top' designers, and i think that they actually like dressing that way.
ReplyDeleteShe looks like Lady Gaga's granny!
ReplyDeleteIt might be what most ladies above are saying - fashion victim, inappropriate for her age, probably botoxed (though I would never blame someone for not being pretty, if nobody minds).
ReplyDeleteBut I prefer to think that what she is doing is having fun with fashion, supporting designers with her uber-photographed choices (and if the designers don't mind such a supporter, why should we? They send her the stuff, I suppose. The are consentient adults.).
I imagine this average-looking-woman from nowhere-in-southern-Italy landing THE job of her dreams, and feel happy for her.
Once upon a time, before she became her own brand - Vogue paris featured her in the "Une fille un style" column: the way she spoke and "archived" her clothes reminded me of the way an art lover and collector nurses his treasures and talks about them.
I like that she's over the top. After all, fashion sometimes is. It's ok if we don't follow her example though! ;)
