The thing with just about any Amouage perfume is that no matter how much I like the Woman version, I much prefer the Pour Homme. Amouage Gold is no different. Gold Woman is a fantastic grand aldehydic floral; but the showstopper is Gold Man. It's so rich and complex that labels won't do it justice, but I guess it's safe to call Gold Man an animalic floral chypre. It's all that and then some.
The oriental fantasy opens with a lush floral bouquet. The first time I ever tried this Amouage Gold I had to double check I really sprayed the Man version. I don't mind and neither should you, but I am aware that Western perfumery tends to relegate this style to the feminine side of the aisle. Floral notes, powdery orris, plush rooms covered with handwoven rugs, and an incense burner far in the distance.
The best part for me is the dry-down that brings together the bellydancers, the menagerie, and the outdoors. Even the modern version has that kick of an oakmossy chypre (and I'd love to have a bottle of the original pre-reformulation juice), and it's nothing short of marvelous. You do need to love civet if you're to enjoy this molten gold. I do, and the husband claims it turns into a honey perfume on my skin. I'm perfectly fine with that-- it's all silk, velvet, and damask threaded with gold (see a theme here?). Amouage Gold Man is over-the-top opulent, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
