Chanel Fall 2013 Le Volume de Chanel Mascara Khaki Bronze
For as long as I can remember, Chanel was greatly responsible for the general bad reputation of high end mascaras. They were shockingly ineffective, smudgy, messy, and, of course, expensive. I tried every new Chanel mascara release, sometimes from samples but other times buying a tube with a hopeful heart (and lashes), only to be disappointed again. The last mediocre one was Chanel Inimitable Intense, which I've failed to see what made it better than the original Inimitable. I didn't bother reviewing it because how many ways can one say "meh"? But lately I've been quite impressed with Le Volume de Chanel mascara (and will give the black version a thorough review soon). Enough so to experiment and splurge on the limited edition color for fall 2013, Khaki Bronze.
Colored mascaras can be tricky to pull off. They're not always flattering, and many brown shades end up looking dusty, especially if your natural lashes are quite dark. Mine are a very dark brown, so in theory I can wear non-black mascaras if they're good enough. As a matter of fact, since my eyes are deep-set (sunken, to be honest) and my bone structure creates a dark hollow around them, I sometimes try to avoid piling on blackness on my lashes or lids. Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Khaki Bronze is a good example for a color that works. It's more of a brown khaki than a bronze, dark enough to give definition to the volumized lashes. I get a very nice effect that enhances whatever I'm doing with my eye shadows (for example, a gray/olive smoky eye using the new Mystere quad that I'll review next week).
Since Le Volume de Chanel is a good performer that supports volume and curl, the colored version is pretty and effective enough for a daytime look on me, and will probably look nothing short of stunning on pale blue-eyed blondes.
Chanel Fall 2013 Le Volume de Chanel Mascara Khaki Bronze ($30) is arriving at the counters. Also available from Nordstrom online.
I'm dubious about any brown mascara, although as a pale, blue-eyed blonde, that's supposed to be more "natural"-looking on me. Regardless, I have always stuck to the "blackest blacks." But I let the Chanel associate try Le Volume de Chanel Mascara Khaki Bronze on me today, and was shocked at how much I loved it. Even without the good eyelash-curling I typically start with, I got great lift and separation, and the color was strong enough to emphasize my eyes without crying out for lashings of liner. I fell in love with the Revelation cream blush, Khaki Precieux liner and Gri-Gri shadow, too. Definitely a great collection worth investing in.
