Let's Talk About It: Hot Pink Lips
The signs are everywhere, from celebrities (Emma Stone, above, as photographed over the weekend at the Croods premiere during Berlin Film Festival) to MAC bringing their Candy Yum Yum lipstick back (horrible name) and making it part of their permanent line. Even I can't ignore this level of pink, and believe me-- I tried.
So, what do you think? Obviously, Emma Stone can pull off just about anything, but can you? I know I look horrible in this shade; there's a reason why you don't see Salma Hayek, Victoria Beckham or Penelope Cruz wearing a hot pink, bubblegum pink or Barbie pink lipstick, so is it a blond-only territory?

I absolutely adore hot pink lipstick, even though for the moment my obsession is my new Hourglass Icon lipstick... so luscious! I find that the blue tone in Icon is what makes it look so stunning on me, with my light brown skin and dark features, and that this translates to hot pinks as well. If the lean towards the blue side they tend to be very flattering on me.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I don't think I can pull off bright pink (à la Candy Yum-Yum) lipstick. My skin has way too much redness in it, and it just doesn't suit my personality very well. I'd probably just look uncomfortable in it. Usually, the brightest I can go is MAC's Girl About Town, or Flamingo.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I think that Emma Stone, like you say, can pull off anything, and she looks amazing in that lipstick. She has flawless skin, and a bit of a tan there, so I think she already has that working in her favor.
I think it's not so much a blond thing as a skin tone thing. I have fair skin a bit of peachy-pink undertone. When I was young, my hair was almost black. Hot pink and fuschia looked incredible on me. As an older woman, my hair is now silver at the crown and around my face and hot pink and fuschia still look good. The hair color has changed, but my skin tone is basically the same. Nowadays, though, I opt for sheer formulas when I want to make a bright pink statement. As for the bubblegum and baby pinks, those never looked good on me.
ReplyDeleteOh, maybe it is blonde only! I used to be blond until about November, and I could just about pull off pink lippies... altho never those bright magenta jobs. Too. much. haha. I haven't tried since I've gone darker, but hot pink lips haven't really tempted me.
ReplyDeletelove bright pink, but only when it has a touch of coral or orange in it - more like a flower petal pink. this one is too blue for her complexion. it almost works, but not quite. it's not horrible, though. but it doesn't make her glow. it can be hard to find the right hot pink - but some of the drugstore shades get really, really close.

Hot pink on Emma Stone--no. On anyone--no. Just no.
ReplyDeleteI cannot agree about hot pink lipstick. I don't think it really looks good on anyone!
ReplyDeleteI think it's skin-tone based, too (I love it on women of color), and also that it looks better on young women. The makeup artist on Chelsea Lately was putting bright lipstick on all the women (most of whom are 40-ish and great looking) for about a week, and I was shocked by how aging it was.
ReplyDeleteThis "brights" trend needs to end soon. I loathe the makeup and clothing. So unflattering.
I think the reason you don't see Salma, Penelope or Victoria wearing this shade is not because they are brunettes it is because they have better sense. They all have coveted their own style at this point in their career rather than relying on a stylist.
ReplyDeleteThis hot pink color is trendy and ONLY for the very young (who also have sheet-of-paper bleached teeth). With normal tooth hue, pairing it with this Pepto color makes the enamel look sickenly yellow. Gross.
ReplyDeleteUgh! I do not care for pink lipstick on any woman, particularly not one old enough to vote.

A somewhat older sales associate wrapping up my Geranium Pour Monsieur today had on the worst shade of opaque bubblegum pink lipstick, in stark contrast to her well-coiffed hair and charcoal grey suit. To be fair, it was closing time, so maybe it settled, but man. :/
ReplyDeleteWith my coloring (pale skin & dark hair), I prefer to go for a blue-based magenta type of pink. It's definitely not an every day color, but it's still flattering. I think it brings out the green in my eyes more.
ReplyDeleteI'm a blonde, and I detest Candy Yum Yum (on me, anyway). I adore Moxie, and was so sad that MAC chose not to bring it back. Illamasqua Eurydice and Chanel L'Exuberante are also loves. But the only way I can wear the first two is with almost zero eye makeup, sheer beige or cream shadow, subtle liner and mascara. Any thing more and I look like a Barbie doll!
