Laura Mercier Caviar Stick: Cocoa, Plum, Smoke

I saw that Laura Mercier has just released several new colors in her excellent Caviar Stick range. The problem with spring colors that they're very... spring-like. Sweet, light, pastel shades that look gorgeous in theory and don't suit me even a little. So I'm sticking with the original Caviar Sticks on their dark and stormy presence.

To recap quickly: Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks are cream eye shadows/liners in a pencil form. They glide on the skin and set very quickly, so any desired smudging and blending needs to happen right away. Once set, these shadows are tenacious and reliable until they meet their fate inthe form of a heavy duty eye makeup remover. Smudging and blending can be done with a dense brush or even your finger. You can also pick the product from the pencil using a brush for a more precise application.

These three colors, Cocoa, Smoke, and Plum are true to their names. They're creamy and opaque; Smoke has a very minimal shimmer that barely translates on the lid.

Bottom Line: staple items.

Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks ($25 each) are available at the counters, Sephora and from lauramercier.com.

  1. Coco is a much-loved and worn item. One of my favorite ways is smudged at the lashline with a touch of Lagoon (also by LM) at the outside corner for a pop of color. Nice and discreet way to brighten my brown eyes without going overboard!

  2. Oh lord I adore these and now want the same three shades you have, esp the plum! I have khaki and adore it. I do wish they'd bring out a slightly slimmer eyeliner version as I love wearing this as a liner but it's a touch thick. Also love to use it all over my lid as a quick smokey eye but as you say, fast smudging is required!

  3. Hi Gaia,

Thanks for your wonderful review (as always). I remember you have also done a review on the new Bobbi Brown cream eyeshadow stick. From a texture standpoint, how do the two compare to each other? Do you prefer one over the other?

    Thanks
    Cheers from San Francisco,
    Daisy

  4. Daisy, I admit that I doubt I could tell them apart if I were doing a blind test, but I only tried the one Bobbi Brown stick I reviewed, not all of them, and there's always the possibility that some of the shades are slightly different in texture or saturation.
