Indie filmmaker Brian Pera, Andy Tauer's collaborator on the Tableau de Parfums series, wrote:
"To say that Loretta is a tuberose fragrance is to me like calling Notre Dame a building."The very first time I smelled Loretta there was something that jumped out at me from the sample: a golden light, honeyed ripe fruit, oh, and a dense tuberose. On skin, Loretta becomes an intoxicating weave of white flowers and fruity nectar that soars and envelopes the wearer until it dries down into a rich amber.
While the official list of notes (via Luckyscent) reads sort of Tauer-like, Loretta doesn't necessarily greet you with any of Andy's familiar accords. The very fleshy fruit and sultry orange blossoms at the peak of their bloom (and maybe a day beyond) are not something I readily associate with this perfumer. The complexity of the end result, though, is every bit what I'd expect: a fragrance that ensnares you and transport you into its world.
Loretta's world is dreamy and hazy. She's lost in a fantasy that lets her escape the mundane; in her dream she wears a sexy dress and is free to spend the golden afternoon letting go and being her true self. This true self is desirable and daring, forward and bold. She's not meek and neither is this perfume. Two sprays make a statement. Three and Loretta takes the world by storm. I'm happy to let it carry me away.
Notes: Ripe sweet fruits and oriental spices (cinnamon, clove, coriander), rose, orange blossom, tuberose, leather, vetiver, wood, vanilla, and aged patchouli.
If you're in Los Angeles and the area, Andy Tauer will be at Scent Bar (7405 Beverly Blvd.) on Friday, October 19th between 5 and 7 PM to introduce and launch his Tableau de Parfums- Loretta. I can't urge you enough to attend the event if you can. There's nothing like hearing a wonderful artist such as Andy speak about his work. I can't be in L.A. this weekend (how I wish! Such a big part of my heart is there), but I do have the ability to make three of you happy (as long as you have a US address):
To win a sample of Loretta please leave a comment and tell me: Have you ever met any perfumers and/or whom (dead or alive) you'd want to meet.
Because of postal tomfoolery, the draw is limited to US residents.
Tableau de Parfums- Loretta ($40, 7ml or $160, 50ml) can be purchased at Luckyscent (samples also available). The samples for this review and the giveaway were supplied by the perfumer.

I have not met any perfumers, but I would have loved to have met Bernard Chant.
ReplyDeleteI have not met any perfumers yet, but I love Mona d'Orio's perfumes...decants that a kind friend sent, and I would have loved to have met her. I'd also like to meet the perfumer behind Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino, and Violet Blonde.
ReplyDeleteLawrence in Ohio
I have not met any perfumers...that I know of...(old joke), and actually would love to meet Andy Tauer. But for the purposes of this comment, I would love to meet Bertrand Duchaufour to give him a piece of my mind.
ReplyDeleteTaffyJ
The first perfumer I've ever met was Laurie Erikson of Sonoma Scent Studio.
ReplyDeleteLast July during the Artisan Fragrance Salon in San Francisco I met many indie/niche perfumers including Yosh Haan (Yosh), Ineke Rühland (Ineke), Shelley Waddington (En Voyage Perfumes), Ellen Covey (Olympic Orchids), Miriam (40 notes perfume), Danniel Sergent (Cognoscenti) and many others.
I have not met any perfumers, but I would like to meet Christopher Sheldrake.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've met any perfumers. Obviously I'd like to meet Andy Tauer. He seems like a very interesting guy. I think I'd also like to meet Laurie from Sonoma Scent Studio or Ineke.
ReplyDeleteI would love to meet Nicolas de Barry, the nose behind the Les Parfum Historiques perfumes and my favorite George Sand. Thanks for the draw!
ReplyDeleteI have never met a perfumer but I would love to meet Andy Tauer. He seems like a friendly, grounded and fun guy.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have met Frederic Malle, Patricia de Nicolai, and Christopher Brosius. I would love to meet Andy Tauer. If Ernest Daltroff were still alive, I would be thrilled to meet him.
ReplyDeleteI have never met a perfumer before, but after buying from and smelling creations by Laurie from SSS, I would like to meet her. She seems really nice and grounded. Talented as well.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to me Andy of course but also Patricia de Nicolai. Christian Dior if he was still alive.
ReplyDeleteI've never met a perfumer, but I'd like to meet a number of female perfumers such as Vero Kern and DSH.
ReplyDeleteDior is someone I have always wanted to meet. The variety and depth of his perfume creations always touched me, because they were so personally created by him. They were about his home, his gardens, and his vision for women after the war. Likewise Ernest Daltroff, whose parfums seem to appear a lot in my family, would be another choice. The story of his romance with Félicie Wanpouille (his creative director), while designing his scents in France, was certainly influential in his creations. Marvelous, every one!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to meet Andy! Unfortunately, I don't live in LA, and few perfumers come to Chicago. At least with Andy, we fans can follow his day to day work and progress on his blog.
ReplyDeleteI never have but I would love to meet Andy if I could. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the draw Gaia!
Although I've conversed with him on his blog and via e mail I would love to meet Andy Tauer.I adore all his creations and would love to talk to him about his creative process.I'm currently wearing Orange Star-I love how the Orange and Orange Blossom melt into his signature base.Perfect for Fall!
ReplyDeleteI never have, either, and my choice, too, would be Andy ,actually. I just love his approach and a couple of his perfumes are definitely my favorites of all. Thank you for his opportunity to experience Loretta! Rachel h
ReplyDeleteI have never had the opportunity to meet a perfumer, but I wish that I could've had the opportunity to meet Annick Goutal!
ReplyDeleteI have met no perfumers. I would love to meet Mandy Aftel and Any Tauer. I would also love to go to Grasse and have not been there. In August of 2010 I created my own perfume organ and began my studies. This was to be my third career. I would have studied under Mandy Aftel. In October I lost my sense of smell and have struggled significantly with it since. Thank you for the opportunity and your blog.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to meet Bertrand Douchaufour to hear his side of the story.
ReplyDeleteI have met Dawn Spencer Hurwitz at her shop in Boulder (and she is a sweetheart!!). Someday I hope to meet both Andy and Laurie Erickson (these are my three favorite indie perfumers). I have also met Brian Pera if that counts for anything :)
ReplyDeleteI have met Neil Morris, who is tied with Andy Tauer for the title Nicest Man in Perfumery. Also, the lovely Keiko Mecheri, who sprayed me with her very own Loukhoum, but whom I did not get to talk with. I'd love to have met Germaine Cellier, she of Bandit, Fracas, Vent Vert....! I was very impressed with Miriam, and would love the chance to try Loretta.
ReplyDeleteI have not met any perfumers but Serge Lutens would be at the top of my list. He just consistently seems to come up with astounding works - perfumes that are complex, evocative and so very feminine (and I inlcude Santal Blanc in that last category, I wear it often). I would just love to know how his mind works with his nose to create everything he does. Thanks for the chance at the drawing!
ReplyDeleteSo far the only perfumers I've met have been Christi Meshell of House of Matriarch and Meredith Smith of Sweet Anthem. I was visiting the Perfume House in Portland, OR, the day after Andy Tauer and Brian Pera visited there, so I was one day away from possibly meeting Mr. Tauer (of whom both my husband and I are big fans). I would like to meet Dawn Spencer Hurwitz and possibly do a bespoke session with her.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to meet Christopher Sheldrake, Andy Tauer and Dawn Spencer Hurwitz.
ReplyDeleteI haven't met any perfumers, but I'd love to meet Mandy Aftel. As a matter of fact, I'd love to attend her class and have her develop one of her custom scents for me. Her work amazes me.
ReplyDeleteOh my, it sounds as if Mr. Tauer has created another lovely fragrance. His work is beautiful-I adore many fragrances of his; LADM, URC and Carillion pour un Ange are a few. This sounds like a must-try on skin.
ReplyDeleteAs far as meeting perfumers, I've had the wonderful opportunity to meet many at the Artisan Fragrance Salon held in San Francisco back in July 2012, Yosh, Ineke, Shelley Waddington, Miriam, Roxana Villa and Mandy Aftel.
As for meeting a perfumer? It'd have to be either Bernard Chant or Armand Petitjean, Serge L would also be on the list, but I'd be hard-pressed whether I'd ask about perfume, makeup or photography. Too intimidating!
I will meet Dawn Spencer Huwitz. I will, I will, I will! :)
ReplyDeleteI've been ACHING to try this! It's on my wishlist and has been since I first read about its creation.
ReplyDeleteI have never met a perfumer, but I would love to meet Tauer, Vero Kern, DSH, Thierry Wasser, the list goes on and on!
I have never met a perfumer that I'm aware of...and I think I would certainly NOT want to meet the creator of one of my favorite perfumes. It could be like the beautiful woman who opens her mouth and spoils the illusion. When I love and wear a perfume, I feel it is about me. That said, there are obviously perfumers who are very gifted and I look forward to their new releases!!! Would love to try Loretta...I already have L'air du desert moroccan (sp?). Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have not met any yet, but would like to meet Tauer

I've never met a professional perfumer, but I would love to meet Dawn Spencer Hurwitz.
ReplyDeleteI've met Andy and he's as wonderful as his perfumes.

I've never met a perfumer. I would like to meet Annick Goutal ... some of her scents are so overwhelming, I would love to be able to see how she would have worn them.
ReplyDeleteI have been forunate enough to meet a perumer, but would love to meet Tauer. I can't even afford to indulge myself in his sillages....maybe if I'm lucky enough to win the Lotto! Charlotte M.

No meetings or sightings yet, but if I could have one, special meeting it would be Bertrand Duchaufour

I've never met a perfumer, but I would love to meet Oliver Creed. His scents are extraordinary !
ReplyDeleteI feel like I know Andy already from participating on his blog, but I really would love to meet him in person. I did get to meet Frederic Malle in Paris (as romantic as it sounds)and would love to meet some of the creators of his Editions. thanks for the draw, fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteNone yet, but I would love to meet Serge Lutens!
ReplyDeleteI think i would have liked to meet Coco Chanel; her life fascinates me. Thank you for the draw.
ReplyDeleteHaven't met a perfumer, but I'd like to meed Andy (we can talk in Swiss (not German)) and Beth from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab.
ReplyDeletequimerula at hotmail dot com
I haven't met any perfumers but I walked into Portland',s Perfume House about ten minutes after Andy Tauer had made a surprise visit. Ah well.
ReplyDeleteI haven't met any perfumers, but I'd love to meet Sophia Grojsman
ReplyDeleteOh, I wish I had a US address!! :D
ReplyDeleteYou know, I start to think I might not wish to meet perfumers for the same reason I don't wish to meet authors (often) -- writing and critiquing is a tricky business once you dissolve that boundary, even fleetingly... (says friede @ gmail )
ReplyDeleteI've never met a perfumer, but I might like to (though worried about it influencing my appreciation for their work, I think the many pluses would outweigh the potential downside).
ReplyDeletetop picks: Andy Tauer (whose blog makes me think he is super nice!), my perfume crush Marc Buxton, Mona di Orio, Michel Morsetti (Poivre and Farnesiana, Caron) Gobin-Daudé, Elise Pearlstine, Ellen Covey...wow I actually want to meet everyone!
