My main conclusion from the last few months of experimenting with hair products is that old "don't fix it if it ain't broken", meaning I'm going back to the L'Occitane products that have been serving me so well. However, I did find a few nice alternatives that work well. Malin + Goetz Moisturizing Shampoo is one such item.
Malin + Goetz Moisturizing Shampoo (0.25% Panthenol) is very mild and gentle. It's a low lather product that works as a terrific detangler and smells delicately herbal and luxurious (it better, considering Malin + Goetz are well-known for their fragrances). The formula contains grapeseed oil and feels very kind to my hair and scalp, which is pretty much all I want in a shampoo. It's the softening and detangling effect that makes the Malin +Goetz shampoo a little more special, as any conditioner used afterwards has an easier job to do.
I do find that I must take extra care in rinsing the shampoo off (I have a lot of thick, big, and long hair, so it takes time), to get rid of all residue. For some reason the formula is a bit clingy and tends to build up, but at least it never itches.
Bottom Line: nice.
Malin + Goetz Moisturizing Shampoo ($25, 8oz) is available in select stores, malinandgoetz.com, and beauty.com.

G - I have just discovered a lovely shampoo and conditioner made specifically for long, damaged hair by a brand I've never heard of before, Davines. The range is called Melu, and the conditioner is rich with apricot oil. The smell reminds me of a non-colour henna wax treatment I used many years ago, and my hair is softer and shinier than it has been for months. I am not affiliated to this company in any way - I am just a desperate long haired person!
