Hand-Painted And Hand-Spun Yarn

Crafts are really not my thing and other than basic needlepoint and embroidery I never learned and can't do anything creative with my hands. It's a shame and I regret it even more when I see stuff like hand-painted and hand-spun yarn (seriously, hand-spun by the artist using a spinning wheel!). The force behind Fabulosity Yarn is Joy from Montana who does things like pick sunflower heads, turn them into dye and use it to color wool (the yellow one below).

Of course, I'm all about colors and looking at some of the skeins is making me think of makeup palettes- real and imaginary. I can't knit and have no idea what I'd even do with yarn, but the idea of something that looks like Blush Horizon de Chanel, any of the Guerlain palettes or NARS Hanamichi is captivating.

  1. I don't knit or crochet, yet somehow I got it into my head that I wanted to spin wool into yarn and then learn to knit wonderful things. Well, I have a bin full of the prettiest wool, a drop spindle...for a few years now. Wishful thinking that I'll actually spin it one day? lol

  2. It's never too late to learn how to knit! There are so many fabulous independant dyers out there who do wonderful things to great yarn bases. Merino, alpaca, cashmere! The possibilities of what you can create are endless. Cowls, mits, hats, scarves, sweaters, skirts, blankets. While there are plenty of traditional styles, there are also many modern designers who do wonderful things. If you are at all interested, I recommend joining Ravelry.com . That handspun yarn you showed would look fabulous as a hat or cowl.

  4. Naturally-dyed yarns have a warmth and softness to their color that is amazing, I don't knit but still love looking at the various colors. I love that orange color!
