Smashbox Soft Effects Powder Eye Liner (Aubergine)
A few months ago when Smashbox first released the Soft Effects Powder Eye Liner I rushed out to buy it because I loved the idea of a soft smoky powder liner with a built-in applicator. The color I chose, Aubergine, was a dark purple with brown undertones. It had all the makings of a great eyeliner, except when it got to performance.
The applicator of Smashbox Soft Effects Powder Eye Liner is too thick and doesn't taper so I can't create the shape that works best for me. It's not hard to control, just hard to manipulate. You need to be very careful or the soft powder will get everywhere; thus, don't even think of doing your face base makeup until after you finished with your eyes and cleaned up the fallout.
Using Smashbox Soft Effects Powder Eye Liner requires a good primer that would keep the powder from migrating. Even so, don't expect Soft Effects to survive from day to night, especially in questionable weather. It maintains the look for about 6 hours, no more, before you start looking disheveled.
As long as Smashbox Soft Effects Powder Eye Liner is still in top form the result is actually very pretty. Aubergine isn't too purple, so the look is just as bold as I want it. The smokiness is soft and flattering, there are no harsh lines and very little blending is ever required. I highly recommend using Soft Effects in combination with cream eye shadows because they help with longevity and share the soft look. Just don't reach for this eyeliner when you need your eye makeup to take you from day to night and still look fresh.
Bottom Line: will not repurchase.
Smashbox Soft Effects Powder Eye Liner ($22) is available at Sephora in store and online.
I have one of these in a sparkly grey colour and the fallout is horrendous if I'm not very careful (read, I covered my face in powder). I like the colour you have very much. I shall just admire and walk away from this one!
