I finally figured out why I have a problem with Daphnee Guiness: she's trying too hard. Way too hard.
These photos of Daphnee Guiness were taken over the last couple of weeks during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week (it's always Fashion Week somewhere in the world). It's all too much, too busy, it's obvious she's putting a lot of effort into her attire, but it ends up looking like a cry for attention (or for help, depending on your viewpoint). For comparison, here are other attendees of the same shows, Giambatista Valli and Giorgio Armani Prive: Caerine Roitfeld, Olivia Palermo, Katie Holmes (despite the weird fit of her pants), Cate Blanchett and even Anna Wintour- they all seem to be having a lot more fun than Ms. Guiness.

I totally agree - the secret of style is that no matter how much time it took you to dress up, it has to LOOK effortless. Cate Blanchett looks great!
ReplyDeleteI disagree! I've never thought of Daphne Guiness as attempting to portray herself as a style icon for others or wearing what's "in" - her style clearly exists in a separate realm to the clean, effortless chic of Olivia Palermo et al. She makes a perpetual statement every time she steps out, and I commend her for that - I've always felt that she dresses for herself, not others.
ReplyDeleteAnna Wintour's little piggy looks like it wants to go weee weee weee all the way home. Is she just saying forget fashion week, I'm wearing something comfortable on these old dogs? Go, Anna! Next time: shower shoes!
ReplyDeleteDaphne Guinness has a couture, classy-ified Lady Gaga feel, and not in a great way. If it was just toned down a bit, I feel like her fashion statement would come through better.
ReplyDeleteCate Blanchett is always so effortlessly gorgeous. Mia Wasikowska should take lessons from her on how to dress (they have similar colouring and figures). Lend a fellow Aussie a hand, Cate!
ReplyDeleteGaia-I couldn't agree w/ you more. Daphne Guinness should heed Coco Chanel's old adage-before you leave the house take off one item. However, in Daphne's case, she should remove approx. SIX items, starting w/ those hideous finger ornaments shown in the first photo! She does rock the white hair look, though.
ReplyDeletereally?! i love daphne's look! it's so over-the-top it's a feast of cra-cra! and it always works on her.
ReplyDeletei think she's just doing daphne, and not trying "too hard" as you say. it would be "too hard" if someone else tried to pull it off. she is built for it.
and i love the hair. wish it were more silver, but it still looks interesting.
on the other hand, wintour looks like she's wearing slippers! and blanchett's chest looks like it's detached from the rest of her body (though i dig that color).
cheers,
minette
wait... how i could have missed katie?! omg... who dresses this woman? she is so cute, and has a great foundation to work with, and yet she manages to look silly or out of proportion or dissheveled so much of the time! don't get it.
ReplyDeletecheers,
minette
To me, she looks like the love child (?) of Bellatrix Lestrange and Gwen Stefani.
ReplyDeleteLawrence in Ohio
gosh, she's looking more like Karl all the time! (where shall we gather for the convergence?) reminds me of grade 7 when our girl gang all wore the same defiant pout & navy k-way.
ReplyDeleteI must agree that she just seems to be wearing too much in every photograph. As a previous poster said, down with the finger ornaments! I must admit, though, that I have a serious case of lust for that white dress in the second photo. Can you imagine if she'd just let that white dress speak for itself, unadorned? Would have been beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCate is sheer perfection.
ReplyDeleteAll I want to do now is run a brush through Olivia P's hair. She kinda has that Nellie from Little House look.
Love Daphne's knuckle-dusters.
ReplyDeleteAnd can anyone possibly look more classically elegant than Cate Blanchett? Every other female celebrity should watch and learn.
I agree.Poor Daphne looks like she's trying to cultivate a personality rather than display one.
ReplyDeleteAnd Katie Holmes should know better than to wear ill-fitting pants. Looks like she has a little something extra in front.
Frances
What did Katie make with those poor pants - backside front or what ?!
ReplyDeleteKate Blanchett is absolutely wonderful !
I would have to disagree with you on this. One of the reasons I appreciate Daphne Guinness's style is that it is HERS. She dresses for no one but herself and in this world of cookie cutter look alikes, she is a breath of fresh air! I doubt sincerely that she even "tries" but just is. That is class. On the other end of the spectrum, Cate Blanchett, is class in her simplicity. That's the beauty of the world. We all don't have to be alike to be.
