Book
Gone with the Windsors by Iles Brody. An old biography of the Duke and Duchess of Widsor. I found it at a fabulous used bookstore in Kingston, NY.
Song
I was looking for Cake's Wheels (has it already been 5 years since that song came out?!) when I happened upon this one. Such a great cover.
Frequently worn outfit/item
Hats. I need all the sun protection I can get.
Perfume
I'm obsessed with vintage Dior at the moment. The real thing, not the dreck they've been putting in their bottles in the last few years. Just got a bottle of Diorella.
Makeup
Blue mascara. It looks great with summery sand and bronze eye shadows. There are several excellent ones on the market, none of them looks like a residue from the 80s. I'm actually planning a blue mascara face off post in the near future.
Food
If it were up to me, I'd eat nothing but watermelon from now until September.
Drink
I could use one, actually.
Guilty Pleasure
Watching crap TV while working out.
Bane of my existence
Packing peanuts. Whenever the cats get their paws on some, they shred them to tiny pieces that get everywhere and cling to everything.
Joy
Emails and comments from readers, even when I'm behind on replying.
Anticipation
Taking my niece to the Bronx Zoo.
Wish List
A lot more energy and motivation to get things done.
Random Thought
Is J Crew employing blind aliens as their pattern makers lately? I'm not even talking about the quality that has been going downhill at an exponential rate. It's the odd way the garments are cut and (don't) fit.

Gaia, I'm so happy you mentioned blue mascara! It is an old favorite beauty product of mine, too. I remember reading an interview with Jeanine Lobell way back when, touting the eye-whitening benefits of blue mascara. I promptly went out and bought some (I have always admired her personal style). Does Maybelline still make one? I am searching for a reasonably-priced navy one. Love your blog so much!
ReplyDeleteMy drink of late: iced green tea with lots of lemon, ice, and mint, yum.
Books: A collection of short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson, a book about reading Genesis 1-3 with the early Church fathers, and the Oxford Handbook to the History of Mathematics.
ReplyDeleteSong: None.
Frquently worn: Shorts. I hate shorts, but it's too darn hot.
Perfume: Vetiver, vetiver. Encre Noir today.
Not-guilty-at-all Pleasure: the World Cup.
Bane of My Existence: it's too darn hot.
Thing I Should Be Doing: using my treadmill. But it's too darn hot.
I completely agree with you about J. Crew. All that success has gone to their heads. The clothes aren't nearly as well constructed as they used to be, and the skirts are far too big in the waist and the dresses far too big in the chest anymore.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving teal eyeliner, tinted moisturizer, LOTS of sunscreen, lip glosses that actually have pigment in them, and wedge sandals. It being July in Georgia, I'm also loving the idea of Fall right about now!
ReplyDeleteBane of my existence: The sun and humidity down here in the South.
I actually have some blue mascara that I bought a month or so ago and haven't opened yet. Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow?

Do try Laurie Graham's novel called Gone With the Windsors. It's written in the form of a diary by one of Wallis Simpson's Baltimore friends. Sly, funny, social climbing at its best!
ReplyDeleteYay, blue mascara! I know I probably shouldn't wear it (I'm 57) but I love it. Check out the bright blue one by Boots. My favorite one, though is by Dior--if they still make it, that is. I haven't bought one in a while.
ReplyDeleteBook: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver
Song: Billy Preston - Outta Space (http://tinyurl.com/28ullnj) Turn it up.
Wearing: Same old black, crinkled-rayon tank dress.
Bane: It's too darn hot!
Drink: Noilly Prat white vermouth and tonic with lime and lots of ice.
Guilty pleasure: TV show The Good Guys on Fox
Fragrance: Les Nereides Patch Antique
Thing I should be doing: excercise (see Bane)
I used to love JCrew and won't touch it now-mostly due to fit. The quality is also terrible, most pairs of pants come with the buttons falling off. I only buy their tees as far as the tops go because they otherwise hang on me like a paper sack, I don't know what happened to a company that used to be a great, affordable place to turn to for every day clothing. They should spend less time on styling/fitting their photo shoots and more on the actual clothing. I used to work as a stylist/make up artist etc. rep and I know they use the best for their shoots. When your clothes arrive-what a disappointment!
ReplyDeleteI was also a blue mascara wearer. Maybe I should revisit it.

I can hardly wait for my tuberoses to bloom
Wish List
definitely more motivation
Amen to the watermelon. I cannot get enough of it. Amen also to the packing peanuts (which in my family are called ghost poop). Shine loves them and I'm terrified she's going to eat them and something awful and clog-y will happen to her insides. Books? I'm reading Darwin's "Voyage of the Beagle." Pure delight. And perfume? Well, someone's got to try & wear all these new tuberoses! Might as well be me!
ReplyDeleteI need to get some blue mascara...
Good morning Gaia,
ReplyDeleteYour "Joy" category gave me the poke in the ribs I needed to write and tell you how much I appreciate the reviews of cosmetics and skincare. I'm fairly well versed in the perfume department, but struggle when it's time to find a new mascara etc. Thanks to you I'm using and loving the Kenebo Sensai line-love their "total lip treatment".
Your motto "I try things so you don't have to" is so very helpful!

Hearing my Maine Coon kitty’s chirp when I come home-he waits for me at the door.

More energy and one sunny weekend (I live in SF).
Random Thought
I recently came across an old Banana Republic khaki skirt (25 years old) and reflected on how beautiful and well-made their clothing used to be.
