You don't need me to tell you that plum is big this fall. It's everywhere, from makeup to boots, and personally- I'm very happy about it. Plum lipsticks come in every shape and texture, from the sheerest to vampy opaque. I have several reviews coming, but decided to begin with one of the boldest options, YSL Rouge Volupté #22 Exquisite Plum. This is the star of the YSL fall makeup collection and it's impossible to ignore.
Exquisite Plum is dark, creamy and offers full coverage. This is a sexy, after dark color that commands attention and dresses up your outfit. It applies easily wears beautifully, just make sure to exfoliate your lips and use a liner. The texture is rich and moisturizing, it keeps the lips feeling soft without compromising the lasting power. Actually, this Rouge Volupté mostly survived dinner, though I reapplied to restore its shine.
Bottom line: Gorgeous (if you dare).
YSL Rouge Volupté #22 Exquisite Plum ($34) is available from any YSL counter. I hope they now have testers, because when I bought it a few weeks ago, my local Saks didn't have any and the SA said they were not allowed to make one. Is it better for their business to have customers return the product rather than just "waste" one as a tester?

I have a follow-up question on liner: I usually just use a pencil that matches my normal lip color underneath lipstick to extend the life a little, but that's with more subdued shades. I can see how that wouldn't work with such an intense color, but what about something halfway in between or a few shades lighter? Is matching liner the only way to go? Then there's the third option, since I've been seeing 'reverse' lip liner around; which seems to just be a specialized concealer.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pictures too-- I love the plum lip trend for fall, and the YSL model is as pretty as it gets. <3
Pending, from my experience it depends on the lipstick. Some, even intense colored ones, have a texture that melds nicely with the nude liner and look seemless. Others require a matching one. You'll need to experiment with the liners you have and see what works best. It also makes a difference if you're using a lip brush or not. A brush is fussy, but it allowes a smoother application and blending.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of of the reverse liner (or any lip liner that stands out). I apply a concealer (or YSL Touche Eclat) with a thin brush to create and define the Cupid's bow, but I make sure to blend it so there's no weirdness.
Would this work on blondes? Or do you like the Nars one from the print ad you did a post on on July 28th?
ReplyDeleteGretchen, this *could* work on a blonde, as long as her skin undertone isn't too pink. Tha Nars would be much easier to wear. I have it and it's very sheer. I'll post pictures and a swatch in a few days.
ReplyDeleteI saw this today and loved it but I walked away with #18 instead (gorgeous red colour). I might have to go back and get this!
ReplyDeleteThe color is indeed gorgeous (I have it as well), yet, being an ex-smoker, no matter how much make up I put under the lipstick and using the best lip liners, all of these does not stop my lipstick from bleeding into small lines around the mouth that i have, and I just can't stand when it happens! :)
