More About IFRA Restrictions

It's not funny and I don't have a good quip for this post.

The issue is the end of perfumery as we know it. On Wednesday I asked here why no one is talking. It looks like the online conversation is starting to gain momentum, which is one baby step in the right direction: spreading the word, because consumer awareness is the only hope in this case.

I'll add more links as they become available.

* Luca Turin in Duftnote (this is a must read)
* Octavian in 1000 Fragrances (and the latest: here)
* Denyse of Grain de Musc: A letter to the editor and also in her own blog (and a second post here)
* Robin in Now Smell This
* My previous post about this.
* Gretchen from The Discursive Daily: first post and second post
* A thread on Perfume Of Life (and an interesting spin-off)
* A thread on Basenotes

* More info in http://cropwatch.org/ (thanks to Liz Zorn)

  1. This has been going on for a long time, and yes the public must make a stand and speak out, perfumers alone can not be the only voice in this., for more info and to follow the trail visit the cropwatch.org website, they have been leading the march for some time now.

  2. Tom, yes, I know. I'm hoping that blogging about this all over creation would make the mass media pick the story.

  3. Liz, thank you for the link. I'll add it to the post.

  4. This is tragic and sad. I don't want to wake up one morning and find there's no decent perfume left out there! Thanks for talking about it, Gaia.

  5. You've got me worried. I went out and purchased a FB of Eau de Hadrien, just because I panic purchased.

Better would be to have an alternative.

I'll take up the mantle as well; I agree, the more it is discussed, the better chance of at least mitigating the current direction.

  6. Gaia, my inner rebel is rearing. I wrote a scathing, sarcastic and nasty blog item on this (in order to clear my head. Obviously not the way to garner proper attention.)

My thought: should we develop a form letter and ask everyone we know to bombard their website?? I'd like to discuss a tangible plan to fight back.

  7. It's not the end of perfumery. I've been blogging about this, working with Tony Burfield of Cropwatch and Robert Tisserand and many others for over two years now, trying to get the word out. http://tr.im/iktR

AFAIK, I'm the only perfumer who has been working steadily, collaborating with others in the field, and generally sacrificing my time in an unholy amount of hours to this.

I now have a new perspective, and realize there is a way around all this - well, not for the big corps who roll over and accept the whipping, but for artisan perfumers.

Maybe I'll blog about it in a few months, in the meantime, I'm devoting myself to my business again. Finally. I guess old hippies just can't take injustice, and I'm proud of my sacrifices, if a bit taken back by my lack of new launches.
