The Darker Lips Of Fall- Rouge Dior Fiction Brown

We're back to discussing the new fall collections in all their dark lip glory. Before we go hardcore with the vampy colors, there's still an elegant option from Dior, even if many of you thought that the Dandy look, at least the way it was officially introduced, is a little too weird. The lesson here is that the fair and blondes should choose carefully and go for a more subtle makeup. Especially since there's no airbrushing and special lighting in our lives.

Those of us who can pull off a brown lipstick would find Brown Fiction to be a very wearable color. Unlike what you see above, it has just enough red in it to look alive (assuming the color on the model was achieved with makeup and not digitally, it's probably the result of layering with the Lurex Plum Ultra Gloss and then blotting the shine away). The color is on the warm side, opaque enough to stand out and the the texture is velvety smooth. I need more moisture than what Rouge Dior provide, so I tend to apply it over a thin layer of lip balm. It means less staying power, but I prefer soft lips over painted but parched.

Lipstick photos are mine, Dandy look from Nordstrom website.

Dior Dandy collection is available from Nordstrom (where I bought mine) and Sephora, in store and online. Rouge Dior lipstick retail price is $27.

  1. I remember in the late 90s see these Revlon lipstick ads where brownish mauve was supposed to be the new look. Deja vu. And I'm not liking it.

  2. Emma, I remember those ads. Something about them looked totally wrong. Just like with any extreme trend, I wish people actually looked in the mirror before adopting it. I like this particular lipstick, because it doesn't actually look like what's on the model. Matte brown lips wouldn't work on most people. Not in real, unairbrushed life.

  3. Thanks for the link! : )

I'm doing vampy lips this fall, too, though with such different coloring I'm veering towards berries instead of browns.

  4. Dain, I'm so happy to see you having your own space and writing again :)

I'm not totally sold on browns. I can pull off a couple of them, but I much prefer dark plums. At least the trend might mean less weird orangey-beige lips.

  5. Hey G, that's a great choice. I find in general that Dior makes some of the best browns for lips out there. An old favorite was Brun Hoola-Hoop from the Diorific line and yes, pretty much as you report it, lips didn't get ANY moisture from it, however also didn't budge ALL day.

  6. Divina, now that you mention it I realize most of my brownish lipsticks are Dior. I like Chanel for reds, but the best browns are Dior. I'd wear them more if the formulas were nourishing and didn't require layering with lip balms.
